Job Summary
The Medical Billing Assistant supports the billing department by processing medical claims, verifying patient insurance information, posting payments, and assisting with account follow-up. This role helps ensure accurate and timely reimbursement for healthcare services while maintaining compliance with insurance and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Claims Processing
Prepare, review, and submit electronic and paper insurance claims accurately and in a timely manner.
Ensure claims include correct patient demographics, coding, and provider information. - Insurance Verification
Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits before services are rendered.
Identify coverage limitations, copays, deductibles, and authorization requirements. - Payment Posting
Post insurance payments, patient payments, and adjustments to patient accounts.
Reconcile payments with remittance advice and identify discrepancies. - Account Follow-Up
Monitor unpaid or denied claims and follow up with insurance companies as needed.
Assist patients with billing inquiries and payment arrangements. - Data Entry & Record Maintenance
Maintain accurate billing records in the electronic medical record (EMR) and billing system.
Update patient account information and documentation as required. - Compliance & Quality Assurance
Follow HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality.
Adhere to payer guidelines, billing policies, and office procedures. - Administrative Support
Assist the billing team with reports, correspondence, and other revenue cycle tasks.
Support month-end billing and collections activities.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Certificate or coursework in medical billing, coding, healthcare administration, or a related field preferred.
- 1–2 years of experience in medical billing, healthcare administration, or customer service preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Knowledge of medical billing procedures, insurance claims, and reimbursement processes.
- Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes is a plus.
- Proficiency in EMR/billing software and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Work Environment
- Office or medical practice setting.
- May involve extended periods of sitting and computer work.
- Standard business hours with occasional overtime during busy billing cycles.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods.
- Manual dexterity for typing and operating office equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
