Job Description
A Class Fit-Out Tradesman
Position Summary
The Fit-Out Mechanic E performs advanced marine fit-out, joiner installation, insulation, HVAC support, and interior finishing work aboard vessels. This position is responsible for laying out, fabricating, and installing bulkheads, doors, ceilings, shelving, furniture, consoles, ductwork, insulation systems, and associated equipment with minimal supervision. The Fit-Out Mechanic E is expected to interpret blueprints, perform material takeoffs, and ensure work is completed safely, accurately, and in accordance with project specifications.
Key Responsibilities
Trade Responsibilities
- Perform all duties and responsibilities associated with Trades Assistant (TA) and B Class classifications.
- Layout, fabricate, and install joiner systems including:
- Bulkheads
- Doors
- Ceilings
- Shelving
- Furniture
- Consoles
- Associated attachments and components
- Work from engineering drawings and specifications with minimal supervision.
- Mark out, shoot pins, and install insulation on deck heads, side shells, beams, ductwork, and related structures.
- Measure, fabricate, and install pads and supports.
- Install pipe coverings and insulation, including cutting and fitting materials to achieve professional finishes with minimal visible seams.
- Measure, fabricate, and install HVAC ductwork and fittings.
- Mount and install equipment such as valves, air hangers, supports, and related components.
- Lay out and install hangers, penetrations, duct systems, and associated hardware.
- Perform interior painting tasks as required.
- Transport materials and drawings to job sites and execute work independently.
Technical Responsibilities
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and construction specifications.
- Perform material takeoffs and estimate required materials.
- Utilize both metric and standard measuring systems accurately.
- Apply working knowledge of cabinetmaking, carpentry, industrial insulation, and HVAC installation practices.
- Maintain quality standards while ensuring efficient completion of assigned work.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressive marine industry experience; or
- Five (5) years of comparable trade experience in construction, industrial, or related industries.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Working knowledge of cabinetmaking, carpentry, industrial insulation, and HVAC systems.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and trade mathematics skills.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and construction documents.
- Strong measuring, layout, fabrication, and installation skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be able to provide proof of U.S. Person status.
Physical Requirements
Employees must be capable of performing the following physical activities:
- Frequent bending, squatting, stooping, crawling, kneeling, and prolonged standing.
- Lift, push, and pull up to 75 pounds occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently.
- Climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, ramps, and elevated work platforms safely.
- Work at heights exceeding 12 feet using ladders, scaffolding, or man lifts.
- Work overhead, at eye level, waist level, and below waist level.
- Enter and work within confined spaces through openings as small as 18" x 36".
- Maintain balance on uneven surfaces and around obstacles.
- Safely operate tools and equipment while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Tolerate exposure to hot and cold temperatures.
- Demonstrate sufficient visual acuity, hearing, dexterity, hand strength, and coordination to safely perform assigned duties.
Work Environment
While performing job duties, employees may be exposed to:
