Budget Accountant | Contract-to-Hire | Onsite
We are seeking an experienced Budget Accountant for a full-time, contract-to-hire opportunity in Newport News, VA. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented accounting professional with strong analytical skills, advanced Excel experience, and a background in budgeting, financial reporting, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
Pay: $30-$31 per hour during contract period; permanent salary range is $50,000 to $65,000.
Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, day shift.
Location: 100% onsite in Newport News, VA.
Position Overview
The Budget Accountant will support budgeting, financial analysis, regulatory reporting, cost analysis, tax preparation, and accounting process improvement in a highly computerized financial environment. This position requires independent judgment, strong attention to detail, and the ability to communicate financial information effectively with leadership, auditors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
Key Responsibilities
• Prepare and analyze contractual adjustments, charity, bad debt reserves, budgets, tax returns, cost reports, and settlements.
• Perform financial analysis, account reconciliations, variance analysis, reporting, and cost analysis.
• Support Medicare and Medicaid annual cost reporting and regulatory reporting requirements.
• Interpret financial data and provide recommendations to leadership.
• Review accounting processes and recommend improvements to support accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
• Assist with audit preparation and serve as a liaison with auditors, consultants, taxing authorities, and regulatory agencies.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or bachelor's degree in Finance or Business with an Accounting concentration.
• Minimum of 1 year of accounting experience involving financial analysis, budgeting, financial statements, reconciliations, variance analysis, or reporting.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, advanced formulas, and financial reporting.
• Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and maintain a high level of accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications
• Healthcare accounting or healthcare finance experience.
• Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement or cost reporting exposure.
• ERP or accounting systems experience.
• Master's degree in a related field.
• CPA certification.

• Transcripts are required and must show degree obtained and accounting coursework completed.
• Employment gaps greater than 90 days must be explained.
• Permanent placement is not guaranteed and will depend on business needs and performance.
