Overview
As a Tech - Specimen, you will provide essential support functions within a reputable healthcare facility’s laboratory department. Your role will ensure timely, accurate processing of specimens, supporting diagnostic testing and patient outcomes. Responsibilities

Perform general specimen processing duties including presorting, pickup, and delivery of specimens within the laboratory setting

Support activities such as imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting of specimens

Enter data accurately and efficiently, typically managing up to 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour

Maintain compliance with safety, safety procedures, and regulatory guidelines in a biohazard environment

Ensure specimens are handled with confidence, timeliness, and precision to uphold departmental quality standards

Organize and maintain a neat, clean work environment to promote safety and efficiency

Communicate effectively with team members and other healthcare professionals regarding specimen processing and workflow updates

Adapt to daily changes in test ordering and specimen handling protocols, demonstrating flexibility and attention to detail

Work primarily night shifts, with potential for weekend, holiday, on-call, and overtime hours based on staffing needs

Support a production-oriented environment focused on meeting departmental productivity and quality targets

Required Skills

High school diploma or equivalent

Strong data entry skills, with the ability to perform 6,000+ keystrokes per hour

Basic understanding of computers and laboratory information systems preferred

Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate seamlessly within diverse teams

Organized, dependable, and capable of managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced setting

Ability to stand or sit for long periods while maintaining focus and accuracy

Commitment to safety protocols and best practices in a biohazard environment

Nice to Have Skills

Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience, preferably in a hospital or clinical setting

Knowledge of medical terminology relevant to clinical laboratory testing

Experience working within a production environment focused on efficiency and quality

Preferred Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED required; post-secondary courses in biology, healthcare, or related fields are advantageous

Prior experience in laboratory specimen handling or processing is preferred but not mandatory

Medical background or familiarity with clinical laboratory testing benefits the candidate but is not essential

Other Requirements

Flexible availability to work night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed

Ability to adapt quickly to changes in protocols and test orders

Physical ability to sit or stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks
