Scope of Role
The Electrical Technician – Vehicle Systems will follow company and industry standards to maintain existing production, assist in the design of custom vehicle builds, and contribute to the planning and development of new vehicle designs. Customers are asking for more customized vans based on electric propulsion. The role will focus primarily on electrical & electro-mechanical systems, electrical integration. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance of production and plans with best practices, safety & wiring standards, and industry certification programs. The Electrical Technician – Vehicle Systems role will require both office work and hands-on time spent working on a test bench or in a vehicle production shop for planning, test, and inspection of electrical designs and layouts.
Key Responsibilities
· Familiarize yourself with industry standards and compliance programs
· Become internal company authority in electrical matters including verification, compatibility, and specifications
· Act as technical lead for electrical department on design reviews and large projects
· Review documentation for errors, updates, and sign off approval
· Generate and review manufacturing ECOs
· Define system level requirements for new designs and ensure they are communicated to external and internal teams
· Research and identify new products, components, solutions, and partners to achieve future product goals
· Manage electrical technologies including testing, pre-installation & setup of configurable components (such as LTE Modems)
· Flash, configure, program, install software / firmware updates on integration products
· Determine and enforce wiring specifications including wire gauges and fuse ratings
· Identify or verify component compatibility with new and existing designs including voltage and amp draw calculations
· Interface with the purchasing & procurement team to define and verify electrical components for each build
· Work with production managers to ensure manufacturing teams have the information and resources and documentation needed to complete the build process
· Work with production managers to train production staff on proper installation for electrical systems and practices
· Work with external vendors on harness pre-manufacturing including the creation and dissemination of documentation, quality standards, test requirements, and preferred practices.
· Work with external partners to obtain product specifications and define customization
· Gather electrical specifications experimentally when not available from the manufacturer
· Support and troubleshoot electrical issues on current or previous vehicle designs/builds
Experience & Qualifications
· Ability to make calculations and determinations relating to safety ratings or hazards
· Ability to read and design wiring schematics and work instructions
· Experience with the following tools and technologies, Resistors, Diodes, Relays, Voltage Regulation, PWM / Dimmers, Plastic housing connectors with metal terminals (Universal Mate-N-Lok, MiniFit Jr, Molex, Tyco, etc),Wire Strippers, Crimp Tools, Soldering iron, Heat gun / Hot air soldering station / heat shrink
· Ability to parse technical compliance material and learn complex regulations is a must
· Experience with Ford QVM, GM CMC, Mercedes Master / eXpert Upfitter, or RVIA a plus
· Experience with National Electric Code (NEC) a plus
· Experience with MECP Certification a plus
· Experience with AutoCAD a plus
· Experience with SolidWorks a plus
· Bachelor’s degree in related field (Electronics, Electrical, Computer Engineering or Engineering Technology)
