Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Family Birthing Center (L&D/Mother-Baby) position in an acute care hospital setting, requiring active CA licensure and a minimum of 1 year of LDRP experience.

Details
  • Family Birthing Center in an acute care hospital setting, including LDRP, antepartum, and postpartum overflow beds, as well as an OR suite for C-sections and a 2-bed NICU for newborn stabilization
  • Unit census supports approximately 70–80 births per month and 60–70 NST antepartum tests per month
  • Patient population includes patients 35 weeks gestation and above; twin deliveries are performed; preterm patients under 35 weeks are transferred to a higher level of care
  • Staffing ratios follow LDRP standards: 1:2 in labor, 1:1 at delivery, and 1:4 for mother/baby couplets
  • RNs are required to titrate drips, including pitocin and occasional insulin
  • Charting system is Cerner; experience preferred
  • EFM system is Fetalink (GE fetal monitors)
  • 12-hour night shifts
  • Every other weekend (Friday/Saturday nights) required
  • Travelers are first to float; floating may extend to other Sacramento-area facilities
  • On-call/standby may be assigned on scheduled shifts, with an expected 30-minute callback response time
  • Scheduling is posted 4 weeks in advance
Requirements
  • Active CA RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses are not accepted
  • Required certifications (all active; pending not accepted): BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), NRP, and AWHONN Advanced EFM
  • Minimum 1 year of LDRP experience required; 3+ years preferred
  • L&D-only experience accepted if candidate also has OR circulating experience; candidates with postpartum-only experience will not be considered
  • Candidate must be comfortable performing NRP at delivery, as there is no in-house pediatric coverage
  • 2 years of overall RN experience required
  • A copy of a valid driver's license is required for consideration
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked — both must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (FT, PT, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past 12 months; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
Additional Information
  • RNs must be able to perform deliveries ('catch the baby') — candidates should confirm this ability prior to applying
  • OB physician is in-house 24/7; anesthesia is on-call with a 20-minute response time (remains in-house for the duration when a patient has an epidural)
  • A perinatal specialist is available on the unit to help reduce neonatal complications
  • Respiratory therapy attends every delivery and manages ventilators, CPAP, and bubble CPAP as needed
  • Each shift is supported by a Charge Nurse or Nurse Shift Manager; the charge nurse does not typically carry an assignment but may if staffing requires
  • One OB Tech is scheduled per shift; no CNAs on the unit
  • Candidates must pass a Relias Dysrhythmia exam before an offer can be confirmed
  • On the first day of orientation, candidates are given a pass/fail test on sterile technique for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes
  • Holiday coverage is rotated with core staff
  • Nurses recovering patients from general anesthesia will do so in the main PACU
