As a Tech - Specimen, you will provide essential support functions within the specimen processing department, contributing directly to the quality and efficiency of laboratory services. Responsibilities:
Execute general specimen support functions including presorting, pickup, and delivery of specimens within the laboratory setting.
Operate and maintain equipment such as centrifuges, microfilming devices, and imaging systems with precision.
Perform aliquoting and other sample preparation tasks as required to facilitate testing workflows.
Accurately input data related to specimen tracking and test requests, often handling a high volume of alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with safety protocols, biohazard handling procedures, and regulatory standards.
Collaborate effectively with laboratory staff and other healthcare team members to ensure timely processing and quality assurance.
Adapt to changing regulations, test procedures, and customer demands, demonstrating flexibility in a dynamic, production-focused environment.
Support the department’s productivity goals while emphasizing quality standards and regulatory compliance.
Required Skills:
Strong data entry abilities, capable of entering approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
Basic computer literacy; familiarity with laboratory information systems or medical testing terminology is a plus.
Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling and data management.
Ability to follow detailed procedures and comply with safety standards in a biohazard environment.
Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with team members across all levels.
Flexibility to work primarily on night shifts, with availability for weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime as needed.
Capable of sitting or standing for extended periods and maintaining focus during repetitive tasks.
Nice to Have Skills:
Previous experience in a clinical or hospital laboratory setting.
Familiarity with laboratory testing procedures and specimen types.
Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and biohazard handling.
Experience working in a high-volume production environment.
Preferred Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Prior laboratory or medical support experience is advantageous, particularly in specimen processing or clinical laboratory workflows.
Healthcare training or certifications such as Medical Assistant (MA), Laboratory Assistant, or similar are beneficial but not mandatory.
Other Requirements:
Must be able to work primarily night shifts, with flexibility for weekends, holidays, and overtime based on staffing needs.
Work involves exposure to biohazards; strict adherence to safety protocols is essential.
Physical ability to stand or sit for long periods and perform repetitive tasks efficiently.
