POSITION SUMMARY
Faculty, Fellows, and Residents from the University of Kansas School of Medicine--Wichita’s Gastroenterology Department provide patient care through our clinic. We are dedicated to continuous quality improvement while providing high quality, efficient health care to patients. As the Lead Medical Assistant for the Gastroenterology Clinic, you will perform daily patient-centered tasks within scope of practice, assisting providers, providing patient care and ensuring efficient patient flow in the GI clinic.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responds to calls and messages from patients, triaging and prioritizing requests for clinical advice, care plans, prescription refills, test results, prior authorizations, forms completion, and coordinating care with providers and other nursing team members
- Coordinates open access screenings for outpatient endoscopic procedures
- Coordinates office and procedure schedules for physician with the Department of Internal Medicine
- Completes insurance forms and paperwork for patients at the direction of the providers
- Refills medications as authorized per protocol and as ordered by the provider(s)and obtains insurance authorizations as needed
- Enters and coordinates provider orders for medications, lab, imaging, DME, etc., monitors outstanding orders and follows-up to verify if completed and/or obtain results
- Manages Gastro team’s daily schedules for Medical Assistants
- Trains and mentors new hire MA’s in Gastro clinic
- Acts as resource for staff and providers to navigate workflows and EMR
- Monitors workflows and compliance for efficiency and safety
- Requests outside records, procedure, and pathology reports
- Assists with scheduling procedures, when necessary
- Monitors inventory for needed office/medical supplies, notifies designated staff when items need ordered
- Rooms patients for providers, including chart prep, chief complaint, HPI, medication reconciliation and obtaining vitals
- Performs care-related tasks such as administration of immunizations and injections
- Assists providers during exams and procedures as needed
- Responds to telephone calls from patients, pharmacies, and other medical professionals and relaying provider orders and/or results for medications, labs, imaging, and DME
- Cleans and stocks exam rooms and sterilizes instruments
- Assists with clean up in the team room at end of day; secures PHI, locks all necessary cabinets; checks refrigerator temperatures; counts narcotics/controlled substances (if applicable)
- Participating in clinic process improvement activities and team meetings to ensure efficient operations
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
- Performing other duties as assigned
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Certificates & Licenses:
- Certified Medical Assistant or RMA (Required)
- Medical Assistants who recently graduated from a Medical Assistant training program must obtain CMA/RMA within 60 days of employment
Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)
Experience:
- One to two years medical office experience preferred
- EHR experience preferred (we use eClinicalWorks)
- Microsoft Office experience a plus
- Bi-lingual candidates strongly considered
