Step into the Shop: A Day in This Role

From the first spark of the morning torch to the final torque of the day, you’ll keep railcars safe, reliable, and ready for service. You’ll blend hands-on mechanics with practical welding—gaining depth in railcar repair while sharpening core fabrication skills under experienced supervision.

What You’ll Tackle
  • Build foundational knowledge in stick welding while working alongside senior team members.
  • Assist with general railcar repair operations and overall car shop maintenance.
  • Handle and move materials safely and efficiently during repair activities.
  • Operate shop machinery and a range of mechanical hand tools.
  • Perform limited welding under close guidance and complete basic cutting and welding tasks.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and develop car repair skills through on-the-job training.
  • Remove and replace uncoupling levers; remove/dismantle couplers; remove/replace brake levers.
  • Support car jacking procedures and participate in supervised truck repair.
  • Remove and update AEI tags accurately.
  • Work toward certifying railcar welding positions (1G Flat and 2G Horizontal).

Experience
  • Experience level: 3 years
  • Preferred: 1 year each in mechanic work, hand tools, MIG welding, and brake repair
