CNC Lathe Setup Machinist / Programmer
Tyngsboro, MA 01879
Pay: $35.00 – $38.00 per hour
Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced CNC Lathe Setup Machinist / Programmer to join our precision machining team. This hands-on position is responsible for machine setup, programming, troubleshooting, and first-piece validation on CNC lathes producing high-precision components.
The ideal candidate has extensive setup experience, strong G-code knowledge, the ability to read complex blueprints and GD&T, and experience taking jobs from setup through production in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
CNC Setup & Machining
- Perform complete setups on CNC lathes, including tooling, workholding, offsets, and machine adjustments.
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T requirements, and 3D models.
- Select appropriate tooling, cutting parameters, and machining strategies.
- Set up and operate CNC lathes to produce precision components.
- Run first-piece inspections and make program or tooling adjustments as required.
- Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and setup issues to ensure quality and efficiency.
- Support production runs while maintaining dimensional accuracy and quality standards.
CNC Programming
- Create, edit, and optimize CNC programs using G-code and CAM software.
- Prove out new programs and validate machining processes.
- Modify existing programs to improve cycle times, quality, and productivity.
- Maintain organized program files, setup sheets, and revision documentation.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to improve manufacturing processes.
Inspection & Quality
- Perform first article, in-process, and final inspections as required.
- Use precision measuring equipment including:
- Micrometers
- Calipers
- Bore gauges
- Indicators
- Other precision inspection tools
- Verify compliance with customer drawings and specifications.
- Complete production and quality documentation accurately.
- Identify and communicate quality concerns proactively.
Safety & Housekeeping
- Follow all safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area.
- Perform routine machine maintenance and report equipment issues.
- Support continuous improvement and best manufacturing practices.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- 8+ years of CNC lathe setup and machining experience.
- Strong CNC programming experience using G-code and/or CAM software.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T.
- Experience selecting tooling, workholding, and machining processes.
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments and inspection techniques.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
- Experience with live-tool and multi-axis CNC lathes.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software.
- Experience improving setup efficiency, reducing cycle times, and optimizing machining processes.
- Experience in a precision machining, aerospace, defense, or medical manufacturing environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
- Manual dexterity for handling tools, measuring equipment, and machined components.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks requiring precision and attention to detail.
