About this job
Job Description
ABOUT ORCHARD OPHTHALMOLOGY
Orchard Ophthalmology is a new independent, physician-owned ophthalmology practice in Farmington Hills, Michigan, led by Dr. Mavis Gappy, a board-certified ophthalmologist and cataract surgeon. We provide comprehensive eye care and surgical services — cataract surgery, glaucoma management, and more — with a commitment to unhurried, patient-centered care free from the pressures of corporate medicine. We are a small, close-knit team that takes pride in doing things right.
THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced, motivated ophthalmic technician who wants more than a clinical role. This position is central to how the practice runs. You will work side-by-side with Dr. Gappy as a true right-hand — handling patient workups and surgical scheduling, triaging patient calls and questions, and keeping the clinical day running smoothly. If you are someone who takes ownership, communicates proactively, and cares about doing right by patients, we want to hear from you.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical
- Perform comprehensive ophthalmic workups: visual acuity, manifest refraction, IOP, slit lamp exam documentation, fundus photography, and visual fields
- Perform accurate refractions independently, including best-corrected visual acuity
- Perform and acquire OCT imaging (anterior and posterior segment)
- Assist Dr. Gappy during clinic examinations and minor procedures
- Accurately document all findings in the EHR
- Perform pre-operative testing and cataract surgery biometry (IOL measurements)
- Obtain and administer topical medications and dilating agents per protocol
Surgical Coordination
- Manage and maintain the surgical schedule in close coordination with Dr. Gappy and the surgical facility, serving as the organizational backbone of the surgical workflow
- Handle all surgical booking logistics: scheduling, pre-op clearances, insurance authorization, and patient communication
- Ensure pre-operative paperwork, consent forms, and documentation are complete and accurate
- Serve as the primary point of contact for patients navigating the surgical process — from decision to post-op follow-up
- Anticipate scheduling needs and flag potential conflicts or gaps proactively
Patient Communication
- Answer patient calls and messages regarding clinical questions, medications, post-op instructions, and appointment logistics
- Triage patient concerns and determine urgency; escalate appropriately to Dr. Gappy
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients of varying backgrounds and health literacy
- Provide education on diagnoses, procedures, and pre- and post-operative expectations
Practice Operations
- Support efficient patient flow throughout the clinical day
- Assist with prior authorizations and coordination with referring providers
- Maintain HIPAA compliance in all patient interactions and records
- Contribute to a positive, professional office culture
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Minimum 1-2 years of ophthalmic technician experience in a clinical setting
- Proficiency in manifest refraction — this is a core function of the role
- Proficiency in ophthalmic diagnostic testing (acuity, IOP, slit lamp, visual fields, fundus photography, OCT)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills — comfortable speaking with patients by phone and in person
- High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Proficiency with EHR systems
Preferred
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or higher (COMT, OSC)
- Experience with cataract surgery coordination, biometry, or premium IOL counseling
- Experience in an independent or single-physician practice
WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience
- Paid time off and holidays
- A collaborative, respectful work environment with real autonomy
- Direct partnership with the physician — no corporate layers
- Opportunity to grow with a young, expanding independent practice
Benefits:
- On-the-job training
- Paid time off
Work Location: In person
