Job Description

Senior Civil Engineer – Land Development / Site Design
Location: Portsmouth, NH | Full-Time | In-Office Preferred with Flexibility

A respected civil and structural engineering firm based on the Seacoast is looking for a Senior Civil Engineer to take the lead on design, mentorship, and client delivery. If you’ve been looking for a place that values your technical skills, your input as a mentor, and your right to a life outside of work—this is worth a look.

This is a firm with deep local roots, excellent employee retention, and a reputation for delivering high-quality land development and site engineering solutions. They’re expanding—having just moved into a brand-new facility—and this role will play a big part in shaping the future of their growing civil team.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Lead grading, drainage, stormwater, erosion control, and permitting for land development projects
  • Oversee technical design work using AutoCAD (Carlson preferred) and HydroCAD
  • Review and prepare construction drawings, calculations, and permit submissions (including NHDES AoT)
  • Collaborate directly with clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers
  • Conduct occasional site visits and represent the firm at evening planning board or public meetings
Qualifications:
  • 5–10 years of experience in civil/site design and permitting
  • BS or MS in Civil Engineering from an accredited university
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and civil design tools (HydroCAD, Carlson, etc.)
  • PE license strongly preferred (NH stamp ideal)
  • Familiarity with New Hampshire permitting processes (especially AoT)
  • Ability to lead meetings, write reports, and communicate clearly both internally and externally
  • Open to learning new tools and approaches
  • Comfortable being in-office most of the week, with flexibility as needed
What You’ll Love About This Team:
  • Culture-first mindset – zero corporate fluff, lots of mutual respect
  • Outstanding benefits – full health coverage for single employees; low-deductible options available
  • Events that don’t suck – Mt. Washington lobster cruise, baseball suite nights, Atlantic Grille holiday party
  • Zero drama, low turnover – many employees have been here for years
  • Room to grow – they’ve just expanded into a brand-new space and are actively building the civil team
  • Leadership that cares – current ownership is still hands-on but wants help developing the next generation
If you're looking for a long-term home where you can mentor younger engineers, lead technical work, and contribute to a collaborative and growing firm, this could be a great fit.
