Job Description
This Drafting Technician position supports a custom metal fabrication shop by preparing and organizing accurate, production-ready drawings and files. You will create shop-ready drawings in Autodesk Inventor, clean and process DXF files, and nest parts for cutting while coordinating closely with the shop and project teams. As you gain experience, you will take on full ownership of drafting projects from start to finish, including creating detailed drawings, managing bills of materials, and releasing complete orders to production.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and organize detailed production drawings and files to support a custom metal fabrication shop.
- Create shop-ready 2D and 3D drawings using Autodesk Inventor for a variety of fabricated parts and assemblies.
- Clean up and process DXF files to ensure they are accurate, complete, and ready for cutting operations.
- Nest parts efficiently for cutting, optimizing material usage and ensuring parts are correctly labeled and organized.
- Collaborate closely with the shop and project teams to confirm part accuracy, material requirements, and job details.
- Verify that all materials are accounted for and that drawings align with fabrication capabilities and processes such as cutting, bending, and welding.
- Support quality inspection activities by reviewing drawings and parts for accuracy and completeness.
- Manage and update bills of materials as you gain experience, ensuring all components and materials are correctly documented.
- Release complete and accurate orders to production once drawings, nesting, and bills of materials are finalized.
- Work with metric (mm) and SAE (in) measurements and accurately read a tape measure for verification and layout.
- Apply strong attention to detail to minimize errors and rework, and maintain organized drawing and file structures.
- Communicate clearly with shop personnel and project stakeholders to resolve questions and support smooth job flow.
- Participate in ongoing training and development with a growth path toward independent drafting and order processing.
- 1–5 years of drafting experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
- Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor for creating 2D and 3D drawings.
- Experience working with DXF files, including cleaning, organizing, and preparing them for cutting.
- Experience nesting parts for cutting operations to optimize material usage.
- Understanding of basic fabrication processes, including cutting, bending, and welding.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and fabrication details.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in drawings, nesting, and bills of materials.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate with shop and project teams.
- Ability to read a tape measure accurately.
- Ability to work with both metric (mm) and SAE (in) measurement systems.
- Experience nesting 2D and 3D parts for fabrication.
- Experience processing DXF files specifically for cutting operations.
- Exposure to CAM and nesting software such as SigmaNEST, ProNest, NestingWorks, Inventor Nesting, or Inventor Fusion.
- Familiarity with quality inspection practices related to fabricated parts.
- Comfort working with production metrics and tracking job progress.
- Strong people skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a shop environment.
- Interest in training and professional growth toward independent drafting and order processing responsibilities.
This role is based in a hands-on fabrication environment where you will work closely with shop personnel and be regularly exposed to metalworking processes such as cutting, bending, and welding. You should be comfortable working in a shop setting, including getting dirty and handling materials and parts as needed to support production. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional overtime depending on workload and production needs.
