POSITION/JOB SUMMARY

The pharmacy technician is directly responsible to the pharmacist to assist the pharmacist as a supportive person. Assists with daily tasks to provide effective, efficient and safe pharmacy services.

This position is scheduled Monday-Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Keeps the pharmacy clean, orderly and carries out good infection control techniques. Aids pharmacist in compliance with USP 797 and 800 regulations.
  • Keeps all pharmacy records and references up-to-date.
  • Restocks automated dispensing cabinet and drug cupboards under the supervision of pharmacist.
  • Maintains adequate pharmacy inventory to meet patient needs through purchasing and inventory control programs.
  • Prepares ER prepack system and maintains its records under the supervision of pharmacist.
  • Unit doses bulk medication as necessary. Labels, quantities and final product are checked by pharmacist.
  • Does monthly inspections for outdating of drugs in all areas, under supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Does annual and bi-annual drug inventories, along with the pharmacist.
  • Assists with monthly controlled substance inventory
  • Prepares an updated drug formulary each year as instructed by Pharmacy/Therapeutics Committee.
  • Purchases drugs from wholesale drug companies under supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Receives drug orders and puts drugs away under supervision of the pharmacist.
  • Reviews charge sheets (medications) on all inpatients, outpatients, ERs, transitional, observation and SSB patients.
  • Charging and crediting of patient medications
  • Disposes or returns for credit outdated medications and recalls according to protocol under supervision of pharmacist.
  • Continuous quality improvement. Assists with reporting departmental quality assurance activities.
  • Assists pharmacist with managing and auditing 340B drug purchasing program.
  • Assists pharmacist with sterile compounding preparations and cleaning compounding area.
  • Aware of department’s hazardous substances, their safe handling and disposal. This occupation may require tasks that involve exposure or potential for exposure to blood, blood-borne pathogens, or other potentially infectious material. This occupation may require potential for exposure to Antineoplastics and other Hazardous Drugs.
  • Record MN Prescription monitoring program daily.
  • Observes confidentiality of patient information.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned
  • This occupation may require tasks that involve exposure or potential for exposure to blood, blood-borne pathogens, or other potentially infectious material. This occupation may require potential exposure to Antineoplastics and other Hazardous Drugs.
  • Helps others succeed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    • Compliance with current rules and regulations set by the Minnesota State Board of Pharmacy.

    • Uses tactful, appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional situations.
    • Follows up as appropriate with supervisor, co-workers or patients regarding reported complaints, problems and concerns.
    • Promotes positive public relations with patients, family members and guests.
    • Completes requirements for in-service training, acceptable attendance, uniform dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Certified Technician in the state of Minnesota
  • Two years experience in hospital pharmacy setting preferred
  • Good communication skills, verbally and in writing
  • Extremely dependable
  • Ability to use computer applications
  • Decision making skills and ability to resolve problems in a timely fashion
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic
  • Knowledge of the pharmacy state and federal laws and regulations
  • Ability to understand and abide Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs)
