Job Title: Clean Room Technician
Job Description
This role supports a critical step in the manufacturing process by cleaning and visually inspecting optical wafers used in advanced technologies. You will work approximately half of your time in a temperature-controlled clean room wearing full cleanroom attire and the other half performing light assembly tasks. The position operates on a swing shift schedule, with options for Monday through Friday afternoons or a day shift that includes weekend coverage, and requires one month of training on a day shift.
Responsibilities
- Clean, rinse, and visually inspect glass wafers and discs to ensure they meet strict quality standards before they move to the coating department.
- Operate a cleaning line consisting of a series of seven tubs filled with detergents, chemicals, and water, carefully dipping wafers through each stage to achieve a clean and dry finish.
- Process approximately 20–50 wafers per day while maintaining consistent quality and throughput.
- Perform detailed visual inspections of clear glass wafers for blemishes, scratches, particles, and other tiny defects by holding wafers at different angles and heights.
- Follow strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions without deviation to prevent costly mistakes and ensure product quality.
- Work independently inside a tented clean room, often as the only person in the clean room at a time, while coordinating with team members outside the clean room.
- Wear full cleanroom attire, including bunny suit, booties, surgical mask, gloves, eye protection, hood, and other personal protective equipment, for 4–6 hours per day.
- Support light assembly tasks outside the clean room for approximately two hours per day, such as painting parts, applying labels or stickers, and preparing components for downstream processes.
- Use basic computer systems to follow instructions, document work, and track wafers through the cleaning process.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and handle chemicals and equipment safely in accordance with established safety protocols.
- Communicate clearly in English with supervisors and team members regarding work status, issues, and quality concerns.
- Train on the day shift for approximately one month, learning the cleaning line, inspection techniques, SOPs, and gowning procedures before transitioning to the regular swing or day schedule.
Essential Skills
- Prior experience in manufacturing, in any type of production or factory environment.
- Experience working in a clean room or wearing a full bunny suit or similar full-body protective attire.
- Demonstrated experience performing visual inspection or quality control/quality assurance work.
- Proven ability to follow detailed instructions and standard operating procedures precisely, without deviation.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong visual acuity to inspect clear glass discs for very small defects.
- Ability to stand for 6 or more hours per day and lift up to 10 pounds above the head to inspect wafers at different angles.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and perform repetitive hand tasks.
- Capability to lift up to 35 pounds and work at elevated heights when required.
- Comfort working with detergents, solvents, and other chemical solutions in a lab or cleanroom environment.
- Strong English communication skills, including speaking, reading, and writing at a high level.
- Basic computer and math skills sufficient to follow digital instructions and record data.
- Comfort working with machinery and performing repetitive tasks with consistency and care.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience specifically in a bunny suit or full cleanroom gowning environment.
- Previous work in roles requiring careful adherence to instructions, such as laboratory, production, or quality-focused positions.
- Experience in technology or experience in a fast-paced environment with cross-training across multiple departments.
- Familiarity with cleanroom protocols, PPE use, and contamination control practices.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness and ability to train on a day shift for approximately one month before moving to the regular schedule.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators and cleanroom suits, for extended periods.
- Comfort working around lasers, high-heat equipment, and moderate noise in a temperature-controlled environment.
Why Work Here?
You will join a company that treats employees well and offers a supportive, team-oriented culture. The role begins as a temporary position with a clear path to permanent employment, providing stability and long-term opportunity. Upon conversion to a permanent role, you can access competitive benefits and the chance to grow your skills in a high-tech manufacturing environment. You will work with advanced products used in cutting-edge industries, gain cross-training in multiple departments, and enjoy a workplace that values quality, safety, and employee development.
Work Environment
The position is based in a lab setting that includes a tented clean room containing multiple sinks filled with liquid solutions used to wash wafers. The technician works inside this tented clean room, dipping wafers into various chemical baths and then holding them up to inspect them visually. The environment is temperature-controlled with moderate noise and includes exposure to solvents, lasers, and high-heat equipment. You will spend about half of your time in the clean room and the other half outside performing assembly tasks. Full gowning is required in the clean room, including coverage of the face, head, hair, legs, shoes, and upper body, as well as wearing gloves, surgical mask, booties, eye protection, and a hood. The role requires wearing respirators and cleanroom suits as part of standard PPE. Work is typically on a swing shift, either Monday through Friday from approximately 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., or on a day shift that includes Saturday and Sunday plus additional weekdays, with required training on a day shift (approximately 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or similar) for the first month. The work is somewhat similar to washing dishes, as wafers are washed and inspected repeatedly. You may listen to headphones while working, provided you remain mindful of phone and device use and follow supervisor guidance. Inside the tented clean room you often work alone, with coworkers nearby outside the tent, and weekend shifts may involve working solo.
