Job Description
The Yard Worker plays a key role in preparing vehicles for auction by safely checking in, cleaning, and documenting wrecked vehicles in a large outdoor yard. This position involves working hands-on with vehicles as they arrive, using a handheld device to record detailed information, and ensuring each vehicle is ready to move to the holding lot.
Responsibilities
- Clean vehicles thoroughly during the check-in process, including vacuuming interiors, removing trash, and organizing the vehicle’s interior so it is presentable for auction.
- Collect and carefully bag personal belongings found inside vehicles, keeping them separate and organized for proper handling.
- Wrap and secure any broken glass or sharp edges in plastic wrapping to maintain safety and prevent further damage.
- Use a handheld device to enter detailed vehicle information such as color, make, model, VIN number, visible damage, and overall vehicle condition.
- Take clear and accurate photos of vehicles using the handheld device to document their condition for auction records.
- Assess and document visible damage and general quality of each vehicle during check-in, using basic mechanical awareness to identify issues where needed.
- Move vehicles through the yard as part of the check-in and staging process, ensuring each vehicle is properly cleaned, identified, and sent to the holding lot.
- Work safely in a yard environment with hundreds of wrecked vehicles, frequently getting in and out of vehicles to gather details and take pictures.
- Lift and move items up to 50 lbs as needed when handling vehicle components or related materials.
- Follow all safety procedures and yard guidelines while working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability and willingness to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions, including snow, cold, heat, and rain.
- Basic general labor experience in physically demanding roles.
- Comfort working in an outdoor environment such as yard work, landscaping, construction, or general construction.
- Basic mechanical aptitude, such as changing tires, jump-starting vehicles, or performing simple mechanical checks.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs when required.
- Basic tech-savvy skills and comfort using handheld devices or simple digital programs.
- Attention to detail when recording vehicle information, documenting damage, and collecting personal belongings.
- Ability to move safely in and out of vehicles repeatedly throughout the workday.
- Previous experience in yard work, general labor, construction, landscaping, or outdoor cleaning roles.
- Experience working around vehicles or in an automotive-related environment.
- Familiarity with documenting information using mobile devices or scanners.
- Comfort working in a large yard with many damaged or wrecked vehicles.
You will join a hands-on, active work environment where you spend your day outdoors rather than behind a desk. The role offers steady, physical work with clear tasks and processes, allowing you to see the results of your efforts as vehicles move through the yard. You will work with a supportive onsite team that values reliability, safety, and teamwork, and you will gain valuable experience in a unique automotive auction environment.
