Electrical Controls Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Controls Engineer to design, develop, and commission industrial control systems for automated manufacturing environments. The successful candidate will lead control system design, PLC and HMI programming, hardware selection, and system integration across projects to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement PLC control logic using Rockwell Automation platforms (ControlLogix, RSLogix) to meet process and machine control requirements.
- Develop and configure HMI applications using FactoryTalk View and other visualization tools for operator interfaces, diagnostics, and data logging.
- Select and integrate hardware components including PLCs, I/O modules, VFDs, sensors, and communication devices; prepare wiring diagrams and panel layouts.
- Perform motion programming and tuning for servo and VFD-driven axes, coordinating with mechanical and process engineering teams.
- Design and configure industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, switches, and network topology) to support reliable communication between devices and higher-level systems.
- Lead factory acceptance testing (FAT), site installation support, commissioning, and start-up activities to validate system performance and resolve issues.
- Develop technical documentation including functional specifications, control narratives, schematics, test plans, and as-built drawings.
- Provide technical leadership and project management support: estimate effort, track milestones, coordinate vendors, and maintain project schedules and budgets.
- Troubleshoot and resolve control system hardware and software issues in production environments, implement corrective actions, and recommend improvements.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, electrical codes, and best practices for control system design and installation.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in industrial controls engineering with PLC and HMI programming (Rockwell Automation preferred).
- Proficient with ControlLogix, RSLogix, and FactoryTalk View; experience with other PLC/HMI platforms is a plus.
- Strong understanding of VFD selection, integration, and drive parameterization for variable speed control.
- Experience with industrial Ethernet networks (Ethernet/IP), cabling, and network diagnostics.
- Demonstrated skills in motion programming and tuning for servo and VFD-driven systems.
- Familiarity with electrical hardware design, panel layout, wiring diagrams, and component selection.
- Proven experience in system integration, commissioning, and on-site troubleshooting of automated systems.
- Excellent technical documentation skills and the ability to develop control system specifications and test procedures.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and project management skills with the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and manage project deliverables.
