Job Description
Geotechnical Seismic Design Engineer

Geotechnical Design Engineer

Position Overview
We are seeking a Geotechnical Design Engineer to develop and deliver safe, efficient geotechnical solutions for infrastructure and building projects. The successful candidate will lead seismic design and ground improvement efforts, perform site characterization and risk assessments, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to produce design drawings, calculations, and construction support. This role combines office-based engineering analysis with occasional fieldwork and client-facing responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead seismic design analyses, including seismic hazard assessment and dynamic response evaluation for foundations and earthworks.
  • Develop and specify ground improvement solutions (e.g., deep soil mixing, stone columns, vibro-replacement, grouting) appropriate to project requirements and site conditions.
  • Conduct site characterization activities by reviewing borehole logs, CPTs, laboratory soil test data, and geophysical testing results to establish subsurface models.
  • Perform soil and foundation design for shallow and deep foundations, earth retention systems, embankments, and slope stabilization measures.
  • Undertake advanced numerical analyses (finite element/finite difference) to model soil-structure interaction, liquefaction, and other complex geotechnical behaviors.
  • Prepare clear, well-structured technical reports, design calculations, specifications, and construction drawings (AutoCAD) to support permitting and construction.
  • Coordinate with structural, civil, and construction teams to integrate geotechnical recommendations into the overall design and to resolve design/construction issues.
  • Provide construction phase support, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, performing site visits, and advising on quality control for ground improvement works.
  • Perform geotechnical risk assessments and develop mitigation and monitoring plans to reduce safety and performance risks during design and construction.
  • Mentor and review work produced by junior engineers and technicians, and contribute to business development and proposal preparation as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering with a focus in Geotechnical Engineering (Masters preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant geotechnical design experience, with demonstrable experience in seismic design and ground improvement techniques (required).
  • Proven experience in site characterization, soil mechanics, foundation design, and preparation of technical geotechnical reports.
  • Hands-on experience with geophysical testing methods and interpretation is highly desirable.
  • Experience with earthquake engineering principles, liquefaction assessment, and seismic risk evaluation is a strong advantage.
  • Proficiency in finite element / finite difference software (e.g., PLAXIS, FLAC, GEO5) or equivalent for geotechnical analyses.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and structural analysis coordination to produce and interpret construction drawings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, client-facing experience, and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to perform occasional field work, site supervision, and construction monitoring.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple projects and deliverables to deadlines.
