Job Title: CNC Centerless Grinding Technician
Job Description

The CNC Centerless Grinding Technician sets up, programs, and operates precision OD and centerless grinding machines to produce high-precision components with tight tolerances. This role requires strong mechanical aptitude, hands-on CNC grinding experience, and the ability to interpret complex drawings, troubleshoot issues, and support continuous improvement in a regulated manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Program and set up precision OD and centerless grinding machines to meet tight tolerance requirements.
  • Read and interpret complex part drawings and convert them into functional, conforming parts.
  • Set up and operate all grinding equipment, including basic set-ups, tool changes, and minor adjustments to ensure quoted cycle times are achieved.
  • Use multiple metrology methods, both contact and non-contact, to verify part configuration and conformance to print specifications such as surface finish, straightness, and concentricity.
  • Develop tooling and gauging solutions to produce and measure complex part geometries.
  • Troubleshoot parts during set-up and production runs to ensure quality and cycle time targets are met.
  • Maintain and monitor grinding equipment during production, including running machines throughout a shift as needed.
  • Replace blades and other consumable components and bring machines back up to production level performance.
  • Perform precision grinder set-ups, operate equipment, edit programs, and make offsets to maintain part quality.
  • Cost-reduce jobs once in production by optimizing set-ups, cycle times, and tooling approaches.
  • Ensure daily output targets are met and machines run on schedule at expected quality levels.
  • Work with the contract review team to provide estimates on new customer parts, including set-up and cycle times, tooling costs, and expected scrap.
  • Interface with Quality, Manufacturing, and Engineering personnel to resolve production issues and collaborate on customer quotes.
  • Troubleshoot machines and feeder systems and collaborate with external machine tool providers when needed.
  • Maintain safety standards and comply with all standard operating procedures.
  • Support and participate in Lean Manufacturing initiatives and continuous improvement activities.
  • Assist with special projects as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and mechanical background.
  • 2–4 years of relevant CNC high-precision manufacturing experience with tight tolerances.
  • Ability to perform complete set-ups on one or more CNC grinder types such as Gen-5, Gen-X, CAM, or Tactic.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC set-up, operation, and adjustment in a production environment.
  • Experience with precision grinder set-up, operation, program editing, and making offsets.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex part drawings and technical documentation.
  • Proficiency in using contact and non-contact metrology methods to verify part geometry and surface characteristics.
  • Comprehensive understanding of PK4000 or similar inspection systems to validate set-ups and production parts.
  • Ability to troubleshoot grinding processes, machines, and feeder systems and adjust parameters to restore production performance.
  • Experience working in a regulated manufacturing environment such as medical, aerospace, or automotive (preferred).
  • Experience in a quality management system environment such as ISO 9001:2015 or similar.
  • Experience in a Lean Manufacturing environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including gathering and analyzing information and developing alternative solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively in group problem-solving situations and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain production rates and meet quoted cycle times while sustaining quality.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Mechanical certification or formal mechanical training is a plus.
  • Centerless grinding experience is a strong plus.
  • background in medical device, aerospace, or automotive manufacturing is advantageous.
  • Experience with high-precision wire or small-component manufacturing is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with polishing, grinding, and machining processes in a high-precision environment.
  • Experience with maintenance and repair of CNC grinding equipment is a plus.
  • Comfort working with cost estimation for new parts, including tooling and scrap considerations.
  • Ability to support continuous improvement and cost-reduction initiatives in production.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interface with Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, and contract review teams.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing facility with multiple departments and specialized production areas. You will work around CNC grinders, centerless grinding equipment, metrology tools, and related inspection systems such as PK4000 or similar technologies. The environment is fast-paced and production-focused, with an emphasis on safety, adherence to standard operating procedures, and compliance with quality system requirements. You will collaborate closely with Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, and contract review teams on the production floor and in adjacent support areas. The facility operates with Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives, providing a structured yet dynamic setting where precision, cleanliness around equipment, and attention to detail are essential.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Rahway, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $62400.00 - $74880.00/yr.
