Job Title: Project Engineer (Civil)
Job Description
This Project Engineer role offers the opportunity to contribute to a variety of residential and commercial site development projects within a collaborative civil engineering department. You will apply your civil engineering expertise, Professional Engineer (PE) license, and proficiency with CADD and Civil 3D to design stormwater drainage, erosion and sediment control, land development, and utility systems. The position is ideal for a civil engineer with at least three years of experience who values technical growth, mentorship, and working closely with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
Responsibilities
- Perform site development engineering and project management tasks for residential and commercial projects, ensuring designs meet technical, regulatory, and client requirements.
- Use CADD, Civil 3D, and related software to prepare detailed drawings, layouts, and models for stormwater drainage, erosion and sediment control, land development, and utility design projects.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies to obtain necessary permits and approvals for site development projects, including preparing and submitting required documentation.
- Conduct site investigations and assessments to collect field data and evaluate existing conditions that inform design decisions.
- Participate in client meetings to discuss project requirements, present design concepts and progress updates, and respond to technical questions.
- Collaborate closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects to integrate civil designs with structural, architectural, and other engineering components.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects by organizing tasks, monitoring schedules, and maintaining clear communication with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Apply knowledge of DEQ regulations and erosion and sediment control requirements to ensure compliance throughout the design and permitting process.
- Review and refine design documents to ensure accuracy, constructability, and adherence to applicable standards and best practices.
- Support continuous improvement by incorporating feedback from project stakeholders and lessons learned into future designs and processes.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
- At least 3 years of experience in civil engineering with a focus on site development projects.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Proficiency in CADD and Civil 3D software for civil design and drafting.
- Experience using hydrology modeling software for stormwater drainage design.
- Hands-on experience in stormwater drainage design, including sizing, layout, and analysis of drainage systems.
- Working knowledge of DEQ regulations relevant to site development and stormwater management.
- Experience applying erosion and sediment control regulations to design and permitting activities.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey technical information to clients, regulators, and team members.
- Effective time management skills with a proven ability to organize work and meet project milestones.
- High attention to detail in design, documentation, and coordination activities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D for drafting and civil design.
- Experience in land development design, including grading, utilities, and site layout.
- Background in civil design for residential and commercial projects.
- Familiarity with design of erosion and sediment control measures and best management practices.
- Experience working on multi-discipline projects alongside other engineering and design professionals.
- Interest in ongoing professional development and openness to mentorship from senior leadership.
- Desire to grow in a technical role and expand expertise in civil site design and stormwater management.
Work Environment
This is a full-time, office-based position with a standard schedule of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, working on-site five days a week. A significant portion of project work, approximately 50–75%, is focused in the Henrico area.
