Job Description

Litigation Paralegal (3+ years’ experience) — Brown Sims (Houston, TX)

Brown Sims is seeking an experienced Litigation Paralegal to join a busy civil litigation practice in the firm’s Houston office.

About the Practice

The practice focuses on complex civil litigation, with a strong emphasis on personal-injury defense, products liability, premises liability, transportation and trucking, wrongful death, construction injuries and defects, and commercial disputes. The team represents clients across the construction, energy, healthcare, hospitality, insurance, manufacturing, retail, and transportation industries, handling matters from early investigation through depositions, dispositive motions, mediation, and trial in Texas state and federal courts.

Because our attorneys stay directly involved in every phase of their cases, the paralegal supporting this practice is a true partner in the work, not a back-office processor. You will work shoulder-to-shoulder with the attorneys on cases that matter, and your contributions will visibly move the needle.

What You’ll Do

  • Communicate directly with clients, witnesses, vendors, courts, and adjusters — including status updates, scheduling, and gathering case information. You will be a trusted point of contact rather than a behind-the-scenes resource.
  • Manage medical records end-to-end — request, organize, review, summarize, and prepare chronologies of medical and billing records for personal injury, wrongful death, and catastrophic injury matters. This is a core, high-value function of the role.
  • Drive case investigation — locate witnesses, pull public records, gather scene and incident materials, coordinate with investigators and experts, and help develop the factual record.
  • Prepare and file pleadings in Texas state and federal courts (e-filing experience required); calendar deadlines and manage scheduling orders.
  • Draft subpoenas, deposition notices, records authorizations, discovery responses (form portions), and routine correspondence.
  • Prepare deposition and hearing binders, page/line summaries, exhibit indices, and trial notebooks.
  • Track and enter billable time in compliance with client billing guidelines (clear, descriptive, non-block-billed narratives).

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of litigation paralegal experience, preferably in insurance defense, personal injury, or general civil litigation.
  • Demonstrated experience with medical records — ordering through HIPAA-compliant channels, reviewing for relevance and completeness, and preparing accurate, useful chronologies and summaries.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure; comfort with e-filing in Texas state courts and PACER/CM-ECF.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the judgment to interact professionally and empathetically with clients, witnesses, court personnel, and opposing counsel.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel), Adobe Acrobat, and document/case management platforms.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines across an active docket.
  • Paralegal certificate or equivalent experience.

Preferred (Bonus) Qualifications

  • Bilingual English/Spanish — written and spoken — to support communication with Spanish-speaking clients, witnesses, and parties, including cross-border matters.
  • Prior experience entering and managing billable time, particularly under client billing guidelines (e.g., LEDES, Legal-X/Bottomline, Tymetrix, or similar e-billing platforms).
  • Familiarity with trucking/transportation litigation (driver qualification files, ELD/HOS data, FMCSR), premises liability, or products liability matters.
  • Trial experience (trial prep, exhibit management, courtroom support).

Why This Role

  • Meaningful, impactful work — direct client contact, real investigation, and a seat at the table on cases that go to trial.
  • A collaborative, hands-on team whose attorneys remain deeply involved in every case.
  • A respected litigation platform at a firm with national reach across insurance defense, transportation, maritime, and commercial litigation.
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience, full benefits, and clear paths for professional growth.

Brown Sims is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
