Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides clinical, laboratory, radiology support, and administrative assistance to healthcare providers while delivering exceptional patient care and customer service. The CMA assists with patient intake, examinations, procedures, diagnostic testing, patient education, documentation, insurance verification, and care coordination in a fast-paced pediatric urgent care environment.
Clinical Duties
- Room patients and obtain vital signs, medical histories, medications, allergies, and chief complaints.
- Assist providers during examinations, procedures, and treatments.
- Administer medications, immunizations, injections, and treatments within scope of practice.
- Perform venipuncture, specimen collection, nebulizer treatments, wound care, and other approved clinical procedures.
- Prepare and maintain exam rooms, treatment areas, equipment, and supplies.
- Provide patient and family education regarding treatment plans, medications, and follow-up care.
- Assist with diagnostic imaging procedures by preparing and positioning patients for X-ray examinations in accordance with provider directives and clinic protocols while ensuring patient comfort, safety, and proper documentation.
- Follow OSHA, HIPAA, infection control, and company policies and procedures.
Laboratory Duties
- Collect, label, process, and prepare patient specimens for testing.
- Perform CLIA-waived laboratory testing, including rapid strep, COVID-19, influenza, RSV, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, glucose testing, and other approved diagnostic tests.
- Document laboratory results accurately within the EMR.
- Perform quality control procedures and maintain laboratory records.
- Prepare specimens for transport to reference laboratories.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and a safe laboratory environment.
- Follow CLIA, OSHA, and all applicable laboratory regulations and standards.
- Maintains logs and required checks (i.e., refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid change, etc.)
Administrative & Front Desk Duties
- Accurately document patient information in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Cross-trained to perform front desk operations, including patient registration, appointment scheduling, patient check-in/check-out, insurance verification, eligibility determination, collection of copayments and patient balances, and maintenance of accurate EMR documentation.
- Assist with insurance authorizations, referrals, and related documentation as needed.
- Answer incoming calls, respond to patient inquiries within 24 hours, and provide exceptional customer service.
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Assist with inventory management, supply ordering, and overall clinic operations.
- Support clinic workflow and maintain a positive patient experience.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEHigh School degree; plus 1 year of related experience.
QUALIFICATIONS- Current Medical Assistant Certification required.
- Current CPR Certification required.
- Basic understanding of patient care, medical terminology, coding procedures, reference tools, and appropriate clinical pharmacology.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Ability to prioritize duties and manage multiple responsibilities with minimal supervision.
- Ability to take initiative and complete assignments independently.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in EMR systems and Microsoft Office applications.
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and sit for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to safely assist patients when necessary.
