Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Electroencephalogram (EEG) Technician to provide critical neurodiagnostic services for the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. The selected candidate will operate state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to record, monitor, and analyze electrical brain activity.
Your work will directly support VA neurologists and physicians in diagnosing and managing complex neurological conditionssuch as epilepsy, brain tumors, stroke, and sleep disordersfor our nations Veterans.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Diagnostic Testing:Prepare patients for and conduct routine, extended, and complex EEG recordings (including sleep-deprived and bedside/ICU studies as required).
- Patient Care & Preparation:Explain the procedure to Veterans and their families to alleviate anxiety. Accurately measure and apply electrodes to the patient's scalp using the international 10-20 system, ensuring low impedance and patient comfort.
- Waveform Monitoring & Analysis:Monitor the patients brain waves in real-time. Identify, fix, and document technical artifacts (electrical interference, muscle movement) to ensure a clean data stream.
- Neurological Observation:Closely observe the patient during testing, noting clinical signs or behavioral changes, particularly during seizure activity or activation procedures (such as photic stimulation and hyperventilation).
- Data Interpretation Support:Analyze and abstract raw EEG data, marking abnormalities, spike activities, or slowing patterns to assist the reading Neurologist in generating an accurate diagnosis.
- Equipment Maintenance:Ensure all neurodiagnostic equipment is calibrated, sanitized, and functioning properly in accordance with hospital safety and infection control guidelines.
- Documentation & Compliance:Enter procedural data, patient history, and technical annotations accurately into the VAs electronic healthcare record system in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.
Required Qualifications & Education
- Certification:
- ActiveR. EEG T. (Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist)credential from ABRET (American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists) is highly preferred/required.
- Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Education:Graduate of an accredited Neurodiagnostic Technology (NDT) program, or an equivalent combination of formal training and clinical experience.
- Experience:Minimum of 12 years of experience performing EEG testing in a hospital, neurology clinic, or clinical laboratory setting. Experience with long-term monitoring (LTM) or ICU monitoring is a plus.
- Technical Skills:
- Comprehensive understanding of the international 10-20 system for electrode placement.
- Strong knowledge of neuroanatomy, EEG technology waveforms, and standard activation protocols.
- General Requirements:
- Must possess exceptional patience and customer service skills, particularly when working with elderly, anxious, or neurologically compromised Veteran patients.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen (required for federal computer network access).
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- This position is 100% onsite at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.
- Requires manual dexterity to place fine electrodes, prolonged periods of sitting while monitoring tests, and the physical capability to transport mobile EEG machines to patient bedsides or intensive care units.
- Shifts generally follow normal clinic hours, but may include occasional rotating on-call or weekend needs based on hospital operational requirements.
