Job Description
Overview
A Tech - Medical Lab Technologist plays a critical role in delivering accurate patient testing by performing specimen processing, analysis, and result reporting in a quality-focused clinical laboratory. This position offers the opportunity to work with high-complexity testing, follow established laboratory procedures and standards, and contribute to ongoing quality control, safety, and continuous improvement. You’ll also help ensure critical and stat results are communicated according to lab policy.
Responsibilities
Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
Maintain proficiency testing records to demonstrate proficiency samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures outlined in department SOPs.
Review and release test results.
Follow CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines as described in their respective guidelines.
Adhere to laboratory quality control policies, document quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
Follow laboratory policies and procedures when test systems are not within established acceptable performance levels.
Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting, correct issues encountered, or immediately notify a senior technologist or supervisor.
Document corrective actions when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
Follow the department procedure for reporting STAT or critical results to clients.
Maintain complete records of all testing performed on-site.
Ensure reagents and test kits have received dates, expiration dates, and opened dates when applicable.
Review and train on new procedures; attend monthly department and additional training or educational meetings; participate in applicable safety training sessions.
Know the location and contents of the safety manual and the location/use of applicable safety equipment.
If needed, participate in government or regulatory agency inspections.
Perform other duties as directed by a supervisor.
Required Skills
Solid understanding of basic laboratory testing and laboratory workflows.
Ability to follow approved testing procedures and department SOPs.
Knowledge of quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) processes, as well as knowledge of all areas of the laboratory.
Good computer skills and ability to adapt to working in multiple computer systems.
Ability to establish work priorities and handle several procedures simultaneously.
Strong commitment to protecting patient confidentiality at all times.
Additional Skills & Requirements
BS in Medical Technology preferred; or BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology; or an Associate degree in a Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433 published March 14, 1990.
Foreign educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF; United States educated candidates must provide a detailed original transcript.
Successful candidates should possess or be eligible for national certification as an MT/MLT from a recognized organization such as ASCP or AMT.
1 year of clinical experience (high-complexity testing) preferred; minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience in highly complex testing for those with BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology.
National and state licensure as required.
Must interact with other departments, and contact with clients may be required—customer service skills are important.
Must be willing to maintain general appearance of the department and follow safety-related policies.
