Refractive Counselor

The Refractive Counselor is responsible for front line patient inquiries regarding refractive surgery and revenue cycle operations involving refractive surgery and premium cataract surgery. This individual will also act as the main point of contact for marketing personnel and may cover the front desk as needed.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Monitors and tracks patient satisfaction and provides ongoing improvement suggestions
• Handles all LASIK phone calls and internet inquiries generated from online marketing activity
• Monitors and maintains marketing material for LASIK
• Coordinates financing/payment processing/collections for LASIK services
• Performs LASIK counseling and scheduling, which consists of: Follow-up communication for potential LASIK candidates, release of LASIK patients as needed under direct supervision of the physician, providing patients with surgical arrival time, documenting health history of patient day of LASIK procedure in electronic records, and statistical data entry into DGM prior to LASIK procedure
• Performs premium IOL counseling and patient education prior to scheduling with main surgery scheduler
• Requests medical record information from the referring provider
• Maintains elective referrals, communicates with referring physicians, and gathers/forwards co-management documentation
• Correlates appointment scheduling and gathers required information for patients referred to academic hospitals
• Covers elective services front desk as needed

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of Lasik and cataract surgeries and procedures
• Knowledge of pre- and post-operative care
• Knowledge of interocular lens implant types and post-operative visual potentials depending on selection
• Excellent customer service, communication, and organizational skills
• Ability to use Microsoft Excel, email, and NextGen

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• High school diploma/GED
• Six months to one-year related experience and/or technical school training
