Benefits & Compensation Manager
Position Summary
The Benefits & Compensation Manager is responsible for leading, implementing, and managing employee benefits and compensation programs. This role ensures that total rewards strategies, policies, and processes align with organizational goals while supporting employee engagement, retention, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Reporting & Collaboration
• Reports to the Vice President of Human Resources
• Supervises a Benefits Specialist
• Works closely with HR teams, leadership, employees, retirees, external vendors, and legal counsel
Key Responsibilities
Benefits & Total Rewards Management
• Oversee and administer employee benefits programs, including health plans, wellness initiatives, and retirement programs (401(k) and pension)
• Maintain and update plan documents, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
• Lead open enrollment, employee education sessions, and benefit communications
• Manage retirement processes and support employee engagement in benefits programs
Compensation Strategy & Administration
• Lead compensation planning, job classification, and position management for administrative and hourly roles
• Partner with external consultants to conduct market benchmarking and ensure competitiveness
• Review and approve salary offers, promotions, and compensation adjustments
• Maintain job descriptions, job leveling structures, and ensure FLSA compliance
• Provide talent and compensation reports to leadership to support workforce planning
Wellness Program Leadership
• Develop and manage wellness initiatives aimed at improving employee health and reducing overall plan costs
• Design engagement strategies and incentives to promote participation
• Partner with vendors to analyze program effectiveness and recommend improvements
Compliance & Governance
• Ensure all benefits and compensation programs comply with federal, state, and local laws
• Maintain accurate, confidential records and documentation
• Oversee retirement plan compliance, including ERISA requirements, annual testing, and Form 5500 filings
Vendor & Stakeholder Management
• Manage relationships with benefit providers, consultants, and third-party administrators
• Resolve employee and vendor issues related to benefits and compensation
• Ensure high-quality service delivery from external partners
Leadership & Development
• Provide direction, coaching, and performance management for Benefits Specialist(s)
• Support professional development and foster a collaborative team environment
Project & Program Management
• Lead benefits and compensation projects, including program enhancements and system updates
• Manage timelines, deliverables, and cross-functional coordination
• Provide training and guidance on program changes to employees and managers
Data Analysis & Reporting
• Analyze benefits utilization, compensation trends, and benchmarking data
• Prepare reports and recommend program improvements based on insights
Employee Support & Communication
• Interpret and explain benefits policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
• Provide high-quality customer service to employees, managers, and retirees
Qualifications
Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field
• Minimum of 7 years of progressive HR experience with a focus on benefits, compensation, and vendor management
• Experience managing retirement plans, compensation structures, and compliance requirements
Preferred Certifications
• SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP (or equivalent) preferred
Skills & Competencies
• Strong knowledge of benefits administration, compensation strategy, and compliance regulations
• Expertise in ERISA, FLSA, and employment law requirements
• Proficiency in data analysis, benchmarking, and reporting
• Excellent project management and organizational skills
• Ability to influence stakeholders and drive change
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills
• High level of discretion when handling confidential information
• Proficiency with HRIS systems and Microsoft Office tools
