Position Summary

The Chemist I position is an entry-level role responsible for the preparation and analysis of environmental samples in accordance with published analytical methods, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and EPA protocols. Responsibilities include sample preparation, operation of basic laboratory equipment, execution of quality control procedures, and precise documentation of results. Working under the supervision of senior staff, the Chemist I ensures all analyses comply with laboratory protocols, safety standards, and client requirements. This role requires strong attention to detail, fundamental knowledge of chemistry techniques, excellent organizational skills, and a commitment to producing accurate results.


Key Responsibilities

1. Sample Preparation and Analysis

o Perform sample preparation and analysis according to NRC Labs SOPs.

o Prepare reagents and standards and document in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

2. Quality Control and Compliance

o Understand quality control requirements and sample batching.

o Owns and acts on quality problems.

3. Data Management

o Prepare sample batches in the LIMS.

o Report sample analysis in the LIMS.

4. Communication

o Maintain regular communication with supervisors and team members.

5. Instrument Operation and Maintenance

o Learn instrument operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

6. Sample Inventory and Laboratory Hygiene

o Organize sample inventory and dispose of samples according to NRC Labs protocols.

o Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment for you and your coworkers by following all laboratory protocols and regulations.

7. Supplies

o Monitor lab supplies and inventory to ensure continuous operation.

8. Professional Conduct

o Maintain a positive and respectful attitude in the workplace.

o Demonstrate reliability, attention to detail, and a commitment to high-quality data.

o Contribute to team success by meeting deadlines and responsibilities, valuing others' opinions, supporting goal achievement, welcoming newcomers, and fostering a cooperative and inclusive atmosphere.

Qualifications and Education

1. Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related field.

2. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, time management skills, and the ability to multi-task.

3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

4. Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

5. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)

6. Analytical and numerical skills: proficiency in performing mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, across various units of measurement. Capability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios effectively.


Minimum Experience

Entry-level: College level laboratory experience.


Language Skills

Must be able to read, write, and speak proficiently. Ability to read and comprehend company policies and SOPs.

The majority of the employee’s duties are performed indoors, either in an office setting or a laboratory environment.
