Job Summary
The Street Maintenance / Public Works Laborer performs a variety of manual labor and semi-skilled construction duties related to the maintenance, repair, and improvement of city streets, drainage systems, and public infrastructure. This position involves working outdoors in all weather conditions and may include operating light to heavy equipment and performing emergency response duties as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate hand and power tools including jackhammers, saws, drills, hammers, and other vibrating or rotating equipment
- Assist with street repair including patching potholes, sealing cracks, and resurfacing roads
- Load, transport, and unload materials, tools, and equipment for job sites
- Perform grading, leveling, tamping, and compacting of dirt, asphalt, and other materials
- Dig and maintain drainage ditches, culverts, and related infrastructure
- Assist with traffic control setup including cones, barricades, and signage for work zones
- Operate and assist with heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, excavators, street sweepers, and asphalt machinery (as assigned)
- Perform routine vehicle and equipment inspections (oil, water, fuel, tires, hydraulics)
- Assist with snow/ice removal and roadway treatment during inclement weather
- Remove debris, tree limbs, and trash from streets, drainage areas, and city property
- Install, maintain, and repair street signs, markings, crosswalks, and pavement striping
- Assist with water leak repairs and emergency maintenance tasks when required
- Enter work orders and job completion data into computer systems
- Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours emergency response
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in equipment operation or general construction work, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to operate and maintain tools and light/heavy equipment safely
- Ability to follow instructions and safety procedures
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding labor
- Valid Texas Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating heavy construction equipment
- Backhoe or heavy equipment training certification
- Knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction practices
Work Environment
- Outdoor work in varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions
- Exposure to loud equipment, traffic, dust, asphalt, and construction environments
- Requires standing, bending, lifting, and physical labor for extended periods
