Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Property Accountant to join the accounting team at our corporate headquarters in the heart of downtown Chicago.
Position Summary
The Senior Property Accountant will oversee and manage all accounting functions for a portfolio of Midwest properties. Responsibilities include general ledger preparation and financial reporting through the Yardi Accounting system, as well as reporting to property owners and various governmental agencies.
This role works closely with the Controller and will be responsible for supervising and mentoring Junior/Staff Property Accountants. The Senior Property Accountant will also collaborate regularly with Property Managers and Regional Managers to address property-related accounting matters and ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance, and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include:
- Understanding and complying with GAAP and internal control policies and procedures
- Reviewing rent rolls and Gross Potential Rent reports and recording adjustments as needed
- Reviewing and processing Accounts Payable and assisting with check generation
- Maintaining monthly general ledgers for assigned properties and reviewing the work of others
- Reviewing and reconciling related bank accounts, as well as select Balance Sheet and Income Statement accounts
- Posting recurring journal entries and assisting with the month-end close process
- Preparing and submitting Monthly Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) vouchers to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
- Maintaining escrow accounts, including mortgage, reserve, and insurance accounts, as well as depreciation schedules
- Preparing and compiling reports for management personnel, investors, and governmental agencies on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, including reports required for audit and tax purposes
Staff Responsibilities
- Documenting and assisting in the resolution of process and procedural issues
- Reviewing, directing, and supervising the work of Junior/Staff Accountants
- Performing additional duties and special projects as assigned by the Controller and CFO
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with sufficient coursework to be eligible to sit for the CPA exam
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Property Accountant required
- Strong understanding of GAAP principles
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Outlook, and Word
- Experience with accounting software, preferably Yardi
- Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills
- Highly detail-oriented with strong analytical abilities
- Ability to maintain the highest level of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality
Physical Requirements
General mobility within office areas is required, along with the ability to operate standard office and data processing equipment.
