Heavy Equipment Operator (Civil Construction)

Reports to: Project Manager

 

About the Role

 

We are looking for a skilled and experienced **Heavy Equipment Operator** to join our civil construction team. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various types of heavy machinery while performing earthwork, excavation, grading, and site development activities. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated professional with strong technical knowledge, a proven commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a crew.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

- Complete daily Crew Task Hazard Analysis (THA) logs, identify hazards, and maintain situational awareness of danger zones.

- Plan and execute work independently while reading and interpreting blueprints and project specifications.

- Perform material calculations and properly identify soil types.

- Execute excavation safety systems including proper sloping, shoring, trenching, and trench box installation.

- Perform shallow and deep trenching operations as well as rough and finish grading using GPS-equipped dozers.

- Safely load and unload materials; operate water trucks and off-road haul trucks.

- Proficiently operate heavy equipment including long-reach excavators, motor graders, walk-behind rollers, plate compactors, front loaders, skid steers, forklifts, and mixers.

- Conduct pre-shift equipment inspections and perform basic maintenance and cleaning on all machinery.

- Train and mentor less experienced team members on equipment operation and safe work practices.

- Coordinate work activities effectively with other trades and crew members.

- Complete machine load charts and adhere to all safety and operational guidelines.

 

Qualifications

 

- Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience with self-perform earthwork operations in commercial, civil, or marine construction environments.

- Ability to use laser levels and other grading instruments with precision.

- Strong working knowledge of common construction materials, hand tools, and power tools (hammer, shovel, measuring tape, saws, drills, demolition tools, etc.).

- Solid understanding of construction terminology, look-ahead schedules, job sequencing, logistics, and traffic control plans.

- Demonstrated commitment to safety and the ability to work in an organized and efficient manner.

- Ability to work night shifts when required.

- Reliable transportation to and from job sites.

- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team.

- Physically fit and capable of heavy lifting (50+ lbs), squatting, crawling, and working in confined spaces.

- Minimum age 18 with valid proof of identity and employment authorization.
