Position Overview
Support Staff – Overnight Staff are hardworking, organized, reliable, and committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of students during overnight hours. Staff must have the ability to build positive rapport with students, follow policies and procedures, remain flexible, and provide support while maintaining a safe and structured residential environment.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety and security of students and the residential environment during overnight hours
- Verify that exterior doors and windows are secured throughout the night
- Conduct routine bed checks and maintain student accountability
- Monitor student well-being and respond appropriately to student needs or emergencies
- Maintain a calm, supportive, and professional presence throughout the shift
- Assist in creating a safe environment where students can practice positive behaviors and develop independence
- Utilize the internal Communication Log to document relevant overnight and morning information
- Wake students and assist with morning routines beginning at approximately 6:45 a.m.
- Encourage good student hygiene and personal responsibility
- Assist students with room organization and cleanliness before school
- Help transition students to breakfast by 7:40 a.m.
- Supervise students during breakfast and morning transition times
- Communicate important information to Dorm Parents, administration, and other staff members
- Follow all policies, procedures, and protocols
- Cooperate and participate with staff and students during shifts
- Read and respond to work-related communications while on duty
- Respond appropriately during emergencies and follow established safety procedures

- Knowledge of protocols and ability to remain calm in emergency situations
- Ability to pass First Aid and CPR certification provided by Brehm
Physical Demands
- Regularly sit, stand, bend down, and crouch
- Walking throughout residential areas
- Stair climbing as needed
- Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
Working Conditions and Hours
- Residential (dorm) setting
- Part-time position
- Overnight shift: 10:45 p.m. – 8:00 a.m. (unless otherwise arranged)
- Minimum availability of 2–4 nights per week
- Weekend availability preferred
- Sunday morning availability highly desired
Conditions of Employment
- Valid Illinois driver's license preferred
- Ability to pass a criminal background check
- Ability to pass a driving background check
- Ability to maintain a clean driving record
- Valid vehicle insurance
- Physical exam and TB test
- Provide First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to participate in certification training at Brehm
Educational Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Preferred candidates pursuing higher educational degrees in human services, social work, psychology, education, recreation, counseling, speech and language, rehabilitation, or related fields
Knowledge and Experience Preferred
- Experience working with junior high and high school students
- Experience working with students with learning differences, ADHD, and other neurodiverse learning profiles
- Experience with conflict resolution and problem-solving
- Residential, boarding school, camp, or educational experience preferred
