Job Description
A hospital in Ottumwa, IA is seeking a Director of Laboratory Services to oversee the strategic and operational performance of its laboratory department. This leadership role is based on-site and focuses on ensuring high-quality diagnostic testing, regulatory compliance, and efficient laboratory operations across the organization.
Position Overview
The Director of Laboratory Services is responsible for leading all aspects of laboratory operations, including quality assurance, staffing oversight, regulatory adherence, and performance improvement initiatives. This role requires strong independent decision-making, analytical ability, and leadership experience within a hospital or reference laboratory environment.
The position plays a key role in ensuring timely and accurate diagnostic support for clinical teams while maintaining compliance with applicable healthcare standards and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide overall leadership and direction for laboratory operations
• Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and quality standards
• Oversee laboratory staffing, workflow, and operational efficiency
• Develop and implement policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives
• Monitor laboratory performance metrics and drive process improvements
• Collaborate with clinical and administrative leaders to support patient care
• Manage laboratory budgets, resources, and operational planning
• Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and reliability of diagnostic services
• Support staff development, training, and performance management
• Maintain readiness for audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews
Qualifications
• Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent required
• Degree in Medical Technology or a related scientific discipline preferred
• Hospital or reference laboratory experience required
• Strong critical thinking and decisive judgment skills required
• Ability to work independently in a high-demand clinical environment required
• Master’s degree (MBA or MS/MA in a scientific discipline) preferred
• Prior Director-level laboratory leadership experience preferred
