About the Role:
A Construction Flagger is responsible for directing traffic safely through or around construction zones on commercial, roadway, utility, and telecom projects. This role plays a critical part in maintaining a safe work environment by controlling vehicle and pedestrian traffic in active work areas. Flaggers must remain alert, follow traffic control plans, and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Control and direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic through construction zones using hand signals, stop slow paddles, and radio communication.
- Set up and remove traffic control devices including cones, barricades, signs, and temporary barriers.
- Follow approved traffic control plans and site specific safety procedures.
- Communicate clearly with crew members, equipment operators, and the public to ensure safe movement around the jobsite.
- Monitor traffic flow and adjust positioning as needed to maintain safety and efficiency.
- Maintain constant awareness of surroundings to prevent accidents and unsafe conditions.
- Work in close proximity to heavy equipment, trucks, and active roadway traffic.
- Assist with basic labor tasks when traffic control is not active, as directed by the supervisor.
- Maintain proper documentation of traffic control activities when required.
- Follow all OSHA regulations, DOT guidelines, and state or local traffic safety requirements.
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
- Stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks including lifting traffic control equipment.
- Valid driver’s license preferred. Traffic Control Flagger Certification or ATSSA certification strongly preferred where required by state or project.
Required Qualifications:
- Reliable transportation and ability to report to the jobsite on time daily.
- Valid driver’s license if required for the role.
- Full PPE including hard hat, safety vest, steel toe boots, gloves, and safety glasses.
- Basic hand tools and trade specific tools as required.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting up to 50 pounds and standing, bending, kneeling, and climbing for extended periods.
- Ability to follow safety protocols and OSHA guidelines.
- Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to take direction.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, or extended shifts as needed.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred
- Ability to work in secure or badge access environments.
