Overview

Join a busy and dynamic laboratory environment as a Lab Assistant, where your attention to detail and commitment to safety will contribute to accurate testing and efficient workflow. This role is ideal for individuals seeking hands-on laboratory experience in a supportive team setting, with opportunities to develop skills in specimen handling, equipment maintenance, and quality assurance.

Responsibilities

Receive, sort, and process specimens in a timely and accurate manner.

Perform routine instrument maintenance on laboratory equipment.

Prepare specimens at workstations for testing, including building worklists, aliquoting samples, checking for clots or fibrin, inoculating, and slide preparation.

Prepare reagents and media as needed for laboratory procedures.

Conduct quality assurance and quality control duties as assigned, including recording temperature charts and resolving pending lists.

Find and document missing samples; follow up to ensure specimen integrity.

Maintain a clean and decontaminated work environment, including weekly radioactive wipe tests and proper disposal of biohazardous materials.

Change gas cylinders and perform routine laboratory cleaning and safety protocols.

Operate laboratory computer systems and PCs to record data and manage specimen information.

Follow all safety procedures, including PPE requirements, and document departmental records accurately.

Complete training and competency checks as required to ensure ongoing compliance and proficiency.

Required Skills

Strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently.

Good organizational skills for managing specimens and laboratory records.

Effective communication skills, both spoken and written in English.

Ability to follow safety protocols and work safely with biohazardous materials.

Comfortable operating laboratory equipment and computer systems.

Additional Skills & Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required; medical assistant training is helpful.

Math and science coursework preferred.

No prior work experience required; training provided.

Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license to commute consistently to the worksite.

Availability to work scheduled shifts, punctuality, and full shift attendance are essential.

Bilingual candidates who speak Spanish are strongly preferred; excellent English communication skills are required.

Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (lab coat, mask, goggles, gloves) and adhere to all safety regulations.
