JOB DESCRIPTION
Functions as Surgical First or Second Assistant to the surgeon for complex and basic operative or invasive procedures. Responsible for performing a variety of procedures or may specialize in a surgical specialty where appropriate. Performs responsibilities of a Surgical Technologist if required but preferably not at the same time while functioning as first assist.

- RN: BLS
- ORT: BLS
- First Assist: BLS (first assist must have first assist skills checklist, not general ORT skills checklist)
- Skills required *REFER TO JOB POSTING FOR REQUIRED SURGICAL SPECILATY THAT THE CANDIDATE IS BEING HIRED FOR. FOR EXAMPLE, Neuro/ENT OR Ortho OR General*
- Neuro/ENT, Orthopedic, General: Breasts/Plastics, Vascular, Laparoscopic, General Oncology, Genitourinary (GU), Gynecology (GYN), Robots (Do not train Agency unless a strong background and here for more than 1 contract)

- Support on the Unit:
- Charge Nurse, Leads, Supervisors
- Charting System/Equipment:
- EPIC
- Alaris
- Pyxis
- Floating:
- Cross trained to all Main OR specialties and Urology center but no floating to other hospitals.
- Orientation:
- 2 weeks: 2 days education / paperwork; 3 days General; 2 days Ortho; 2 days Neuro; 1 day Urology. (Subject to change based on unit needs)
- Scheduling:
- Variable start times for Day shift (Anywhere between 5:30am-7am)
- Weekend rotation: N/A
- Can we approve time off? Check with hiring supervisor
- On Call
- 30 min response time
- General / Neuro
- - AM 3-5 call slots Monday through Friday; 1-2 Saturday and/or Sunday (all in an 8 week schedule)
- *subject to change based on staffing
- - PM 5-8 overnight call slots (all in an 8 week schedule)
- *subject to change based on department needs
- Orthopedic Surgical Assistants
- 1 day each week Monday Thursday (5-week call schedule)
- 1 call weekend every 5 weeks (Friday through Sunday)
