The Shop Technician installs and customizes equipment on a wide range of trucks, including plow trucks, service trucks, tool box trucks, and dump trucks. This role focuses on upfitting pre-fabricated and pre-assembled equipment onto truck frames according to specific client requirements. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and the ability to interpret blueprints and wiring diagrams to ensure safe, high-quality installations.
Responsibilities
- Install pre-fabricated and pre-assembled equipment such as lifts, hitches, plows, graders, and tool boxes onto truck frames using hand and power tools.
- Read and interpret blueprints and prints to ensure correct, safe placement and attachment of equipment.
- Install wire harnesses into trucks to connect equipment to the control box in the cab.
- Install lights onto trucks after plows, buckets, or other equipment are installed.
- Fabricate metal parts as needed to ensure proper fit and function on specific vehicles.
- Install hydraulic hoses and related components where required for certain equipment.
- Use hand tools to attach final assemblies and complete upfit work on trucks.
- Tape and prepare trucks for paint touch-ups to maintain a professional finish.
- Apply liquid paint in the paint booth to buckets, frames, hitches, and related components.
- Work in both independent and team settings depending on project needs.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and handle tools and equipment safely.
- Perform repairs on trucks and equipment as needed, including occasional Saturday work on a voluntary basis.
- Proven mechanical aptitude and comfort working with mechanical assemblies.
- Experience using hand tools and power tools for assembly and installation work.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and prints for mechanical and electrical installations.
- Experience with mechanical assembly, fitting, and repair tasks.
- Basic electrical skills, including working with wiring and wire harnesses.
- Ability to perform fabrication work, including basic metal fabrication.
- Capability to work in awkward positions to access various parts of the vehicle.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds safely and repeatedly as needed.
- Ability to work on feet for long hours throughout the day.
- Comfort working with hydraulic components, including hoses and fittings.
- Attention to detail to ensure safe, accurate, and high-quality installations.
- Experience working in a shop environment performing truck or equipment upfitting is a plus.
- Background in welding or fabrication is beneficial.
- Familiarity with assembly equipment and mechanical fitting processes.
- Experience with electrical and mechanical repair work.
- Preferred: possession of personal tools and a toolbox for daily use.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to custom client requirements.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Work Environment
This role is based in a clean, organized shop environment that is not excessively noisy. Music plays in the Background, creating a comfortable atmosphere while work is performed. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the option for employees to start earlier around 6:30 a.m. to earn overtime. Typical weekly hours range from 40 to 50, with 40 hours as the standard expectation and additional hours offered but not required. The showroom operates from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and some technicians choose to come in on a voluntary basis to perform repairs. Work involves a mix of independent tasks and collaborative projects depending on the assignment. Technicians frequently stand for long periods, lift up to 75 pounds, and work in various positions around the trucks. Personal tools and a toolbox are preferred for daily use, and the shop uses standard hand tools, power tools, and paint booth equipment to complete upfitting and finishing work.
