POSITION OVERVIEW
The Superintendent, Tails & Water Operations is accountable for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution of all tailings and water system operations. This role is responsible for achieving site targets related to HSEC, cost, quality, production, and water system performance through disciplined execution of work plans developed by Water Management and Tailings Governance & Engineering.
This position provides leadership, direction, and oversight for all field execution activities, including coordination of multiple rotating crews. The Superintendent ensures work is executed in alignment with defined plans, system constraints, regulatory requirements, and Tailings Management System (TMS) controls.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure all employees and contractors comply with site safety standards, MSHA regulations, and company procedures
- Operational Leadership: Direct and oversee all tailings and water system operational activities to meet safety, production, cost, and reliability targets
- Work Execution: Ensure all field work is executed safely, on schedule, and in accordance with plans, system constraints, and standards
- Plan Implementation: Execute deposition plans water operating strategies, and operational controls developed by Tailings Governance & Engineering and Water Management
- Crew Leadership: Lead 4 rotating day/night crews and 2 day-shift (7x7) crews, ensuring effective supervision, staffing, and performance across all shifts
- Performance Management: Establish expectations, monitor KPIs, and drive accountability for operational performance and results
- Resource Management: Allocate labor, equipment, and materials to support safe and efficient execution of planned and unplanned work
- System Monitoring: Monitor field performance of tailings deposition, water distribution, supply, reclaim and storage; identify and respond to operational issues
- Coordination: Work closely with Water Management and Tailings Governance & Engineering to ensure alignment between operational execution, water system constraints, deposition plans, and risk controls.
- Feedback & Improvement: Provide field feedback to improve constructability, execution efficiency, and overall system performance
- Compliance & TMS Support: Execute all work in accordance with Tailings Management System (TMS) requirements and Water Management Standard expectations; support inspections, audits, conformance assessments, and compliance activities
- Water System Reliability: Support achievement of water supply, reclaim, storage, and water recovery targets through reliable operation of water infrastructure and timely response to operational issues.
- Cost Control: Monitor and manage budgets, costs, and resource utilization to meet financial targets
- Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement improvements in operational processes, safety performance, and system efficiency
- Reporting: Produce and review daily, weekly, and monthly reports to track performance against plan and KPIs
- Systems Utilization: Utilize SAP and Microsoft Office tools for work management, reporting, and data analysis
- Field Presence: Maintain a strong field presence to verify execution quality, reinforce standards, and ensure consistency
- Stakeholder Coordination: Coordinate with maintenance, mine operations, contractors, and vendors to support operational objectives
- Values Alignment: Lead in alignment with company values and expectations for accountability, execution, and results
Required
- Associate’s degree in Mining Technology, Construction Management or related field, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 10–15 years of experience in mining or heavy industry operations
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in field-based environments
- Experience managing multi-crew, 24/7 operations
- Strong knowledge of tailings operations, water distribution systems, reclaim systems, pumping systems, and water infrastructure operations.
- Experience supervising operation of tailings deposition, water distribution, reclaim, or water supply systems in a mining environment.
- Experience with work management systems (SAP or equivalent)
- Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
Preferred
- Experience in copper mining or large-scale open pit operations
- Experience with tailings deposition systems and water distribution/reclaim
- Familiarity with Tailings Management Systems (TMS)
WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Work performed in both office and field environments
- Frequent walking on uneven ground and around active mining areas
- Exposure to extreme weather conditions including heat, dust, and wind
- Work around heavy equipment and active operations
- Ability to climb ladders and access elevated work areas
- Ability to always wear required PPE in operational areas
All candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment medical exam, drug and alcohol test, and background check. All positions require a pre-placement physical examination to ensure candidates are 'fit for duty’. Additional training and/or testing may be required.
