Position Summary
The Corporate Safety and Compliance Manager will provide leadership for the company’s safety, regulatory compliance, culture and risk management efforts across multiple construction sites and active projects. This role oversees the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety programs, ensuring alignment with OSHA requirements and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The position partners closely with project leadership and field teams to reduce incidents, strengthen safety culture, and proactively manage operational risk. This role reports to Director of Risk Management and serves as a key advisor to project managers and executives on safety performance and compliance strategy. The perfect candidate would possess strong safety and compliance with a history of work as a Superintendent.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement corporate safety program updates, standards, and site-specific safety plans aligned with company culture, operations and project requirements.
- Ensure OSHA compliance and adherence to all applicable construction safety regulations, codes, and client safety requirements.
- Conduct routine and unannounced site safety audits, inspections, and field observations; document findings and drive corrective actions to closure.
- Investigate incidents, near-misses, and safety concerns; lead root-cause analysis, maintain required records, and coordinate timely reporting.
- Manage safety training programs, including onboarding, toolbox talks, competency tracking, and refresher training for employees and subcontractors.
- Assess project and operational risks through job hazard analyses (JHAs), pre-task planning, and trend analysis; recommend mitigation strategies.
- Maintain and update safety policies, procedures, and documentation (e.g., manuals, forms, logs) to support consistent execution across projects.
- Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and field teams to integrate safety into planning, scheduling, and daily execution.
- Monitor leading and lagging indicators (e.g., inspections, observations, TRIR) and present performance updates and improvement plans to leadership.
- Support subcontractor prequalification, onboarding, and compliance verification to ensure alignment with company and project safety expectations.
- Champion the Corporate safety culture in collaboration with all levels of management and workers.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to travel 60-70%
- Bachelor’s degree in safety management, Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of progressive construction safety experience supporting active job sites and multiple concurrent projects.
- Previous work experience as a Project Manager or Superintendent strongly preferred
- Current OSHA 30-Hour certification
- Professional certification such as CSP or CHST or the ability to obtain within an agreed timeframe.
- Working knowledge of OSHA standards and applicable federal, state, and local construction safety regulations.
- Ability to provide confident leadership during stressful situations.
- Experience implementing and maintaining various Safety and Project Management technology platforms including audits, corrective actions, and performance metrics.
- Proficiency with incident reporting, investigation methods, and documentation practices, including recordkeeping requirements (e.g., OSHA logs).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel routinely to active construction sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- OSHA 500 Outreach Trainer Preferred
- Experience supporting a general contractor with diverse project types (commercial, industrial, civil, or multi-family) and multiple geographic regions.
- Familiarity with client-driven safety/project management programs and prequalification platforms (Autodesk, Breadcrumb, Avetta, or similar).
- Training credentials (e.g., OSHA Authorized Trainer, First Aid/CPR/AED instructor, or equivalent).
- Experience with environmental compliance elements relevant to construction (e.g., stormwater, hazardous materials awareness).
- Strong capability in data analysis and dashboard reporting to identify trends and drive preventive actions.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to visit active construction sites regularly and work in varied weather and site conditions.
- Ability to navigate uneven terrain, climb stairs/ladders where permitted, and access work areas to perform inspections.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, gloves, and appropriate footwear.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during site audits, observations, and incident response activities.
