Contract Attorney (Long-Term Federal Contract)

Location: Washington, DC (On-Site)
Schedule: Full-Time, 40 Hours per Week, Monday–Friday
Position Type: Long-Term Contract
Bar Admission: Active membership in good standing with any U.S. state bar or the District of Columbia Bar required


A federal agency headquartered in Washington, DC is seeking an experienced and highly motivated attorney to provide legal counsel and litigation support to its Office of General Counsel (OGC). This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned legal professional who enjoys working on complex federal legal matters and partnering with senior government attorneys on high-impact issues.

The successful candidate will advise agency leadership and OGC personnel on a broad range of legal matters while supporting significant litigation, administrative proceedings, and strategic legal initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Research, Analysis & Counsel

  • Conduct comprehensive legal research and prepare formal legal memoranda.
  • Analyze complex legal issues and develop strategic options and written recommendations for agency leadership and OGC.
  • Provide legal advice and subject matter expertise in areas including:
    • Administrative Law
    • Employment Law
    • Privacy Law
    • Intellectual Property Law
    • Employee Benefits Law
    • Procurement and Contracting Law
  • Support OGC attorneys with legal analysis, risk assessment, and policy interpretation.

Litigation Support

  • Conduct legal research related to active and anticipated litigation.
  • Develop litigation strategies and provide recommendations regarding claims, complaints, and legal disputes.
  • Draft, review, and edit pleadings, motions, briefs, and other litigation documents.
  • Assist with settlement discussions and negotiations.
  • Advise on local trial practice and procedural matters.
  • Support all phases of discovery, including:
    • Depositions
    • Document review and analysis
    • Written discovery responses
    • Witness preparation
  • Prepare and file court documents.
  • Assist with trial preparation and courtroom presentations.
  • Prepare, examine, and cross-examine witnesses.
  • Identify, recommend, and coordinate expert witnesses when necessary.
  • Attend court proceedings, hearings, conferences, trials, and post-trial matters.
  • Assist with appellate matters and related legal proceedings.
  • Perform additional legal services as directed by OGC personnel.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar membership in good standing in any U.S. state or the District of Columbia.
  • Demonstrated experience in litigation and legal research, writing, and analysis.
  • Strong drafting, advocacy, and communication skills.
  • Experience handling complex legal matters in a government, regulatory, or large organizational environment is highly desirable.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a collaborative legal team environment.
