Job Title: Histology Technician
Job Description

The Histology Technician prepares, processes, and analyzes tissue specimens to support accurate and timely diagnostic results. This role involves handling specimens from accessioning through slide preparation and microscopic review, while maintaining strict quality, safety, and documentation standards in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Accession tissue specimens accurately and ensure proper identification and labeling throughout all stages of processing.
  • Receive and prepare tissue specimens in accordance with established laboratory protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Perform grossing and inking of tissue specimens when qualified under applicable CLIA requirements.
  • Prepare media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions according to standard operating procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Process tissue specimens, including embedding, microtomy/cutting, staining, and use of cryostat and freezing techniques.
  • Label and prepare slides with a high level of accuracy to ensure proper correlation with tissue specimens.
  • Examine prepared slides under the microscope to detect deviations from normal histology and report abnormalities to appropriate personnel.
  • With oversight, identify problems that may affect diagnostic interpretation or test results and escalate issues promptly.
  • Preserve and store tissue samples and slides in an organized and secure manner to support future review and reference.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory instruments, equipment, and work areas to ensure proper function and compliance with safety standards.
  • Log, file, track, and store specimens and slides using established laboratory systems and procedures.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies inventory by monitoring stock levels and communicating replenishment needs in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate and complete documentation in all required QA/QC logs as specified by agency and laboratory standards.
  • Adhere to all compliance requirements, including completion of required compliance training and observance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate effectively with laboratory staff, leadership, and other teams to support efficient workflow and high-quality patient care.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support overall laboratory operations and continuous improvement.
Essential Skills
  • Proficiency in histology techniques, including tissue processing, embedding, microtomy/cutting, staining, and use of a cryostat.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy and tissue pathology, with the ability to recognize deviations from normal under the microscope.
  • Associate’s degree required.
  • Completion of a NAACLS-accredited histology training program required.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory concepts, practices, and procedures relevant to histology and high-complexity testing.
  • Detail-oriented approach with a high degree of accuracy in specimen handling, labeling, and documentation.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse teams and convey findings clearly.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of integrity, ethical judgment, and confidentiality when handling sensitive data and patient information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and the ability to learn new software quickly.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, leadership, and the public.
  • Ability to use time productively and contribute to high levels of operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information in accordance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • CLIA qualification to perform specified job duties preferred, including a minimum of 60 semester hours with either 24 hours in medical laboratory technology, or 24 hours with at least 6 hours in chemistry, 6 hours in biology, and 12 additional hours in any combination of chemistry, biology, or medical technology, plus three months of documented laboratory training in high-complexity testing by specialty.
  • Previous experience as a histology technician preferred.
  • Prior experience in Mohs histotechnology or dermatology settings is a plus.
  • Experience maintaining QA/QC logs and working within regulated laboratory environments is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to evolving procedures, technologies, and regulatory requirements.
Work Environment

This is a full-time position, working 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday from 7:45 AM to 5:00 PM. The role is based in a clinical or laboratory setting that involves routine use of histology equipment such as tissue processors, embedding stations, microtomes, cryostats, and staining instruments. The environment is fast-paced and deadline-driven, requiring sustained focus, careful handling of specimens, and adherence to safety and quality protocols. Team members work closely with other laboratory professionals and clinical staff, using computer systems and Microsoft Office applications to manage data, documentation, and communication. Standard laboratory attire and appropriate personal protective equipment are required to ensure safety and compliance.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $32.00/hr.
