Major Duties

• Reviewing and implementing legislative proposals, regulations, standards, policies and operating guidance.
• Evaluating and securing compliance with environmental laws and programs through self-assessments, external assessments, audits, inspections, investigations and enforcement and corrective action activities.
• Visits tenant/field activity operations managed by DLA Distribution HQ to monitor and determine efficiency of existing environmental programs.
• Coordinating program or projects to achieve and maintain environmental compliance of ongoing operations or remediate environmental violations.
• Provides expert technical support for environmental compliance, environmental liability identification and tracking, environmental cleanup, environmental restoration and environmental support services.

Qualification Summary

To qualify for an Environmental Protection Specialist, your resume and supporting documentation must support: A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-13 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes: Executing environmental protection support services related to environmental compliance (hazardous materials and hazardous wastes, air and water quality, spill prevention and control, cultural and natural resources ,and real property assets such as fuel tanks, emergency generators, and storage lots) and industrial activities. Reviewing and implementing legislative proposals, environmental regulations, policy guidance and development of standard operations procedures and guidance documents. Evaluating the environmental effects of proposed actions (e.g., construction, leasing, or mission changes) to ensure proper documentation and planning to include Environmental Condition of Property (ECOP) assessments and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Utilizing environmental information systems to meet tracking and reporting requirements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Demands The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as prolonged standing, bending, and stooping to observe work operations and identify hazardous materials containers and hazardous waste containers as well as leaking containers in a treatment, storage, and disposal area. Work Environment The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomforts that require special safety and environmental precautions (e.g. inspection of hazardous waste facilities, hazardous waste accumulation areas, satellite accumulation areas, and hazard materials warehouses where there is a risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals, pesticides, radioactive materials, and/or other pollutants.
