Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time (as applicable)
Location: Los Angeles, CA.
The Ambulance Field Training Officer (FTO) is responsible for onboarding, training, and mentoring newly hired EMTs in the field. This role ensures clinical competence, operational readiness, and professional development while upholding company policies, medical protocols, and regulatory standards. The FTO serves as a role model, coach, and evaluator, promoting a culture of safety, excellence, and accountability.
Key ResponsibilitiesTrain and evaluate new EMTs during class and field orientation
Deliver structured field training in accordance with approved FTO programs
Assess clinical skills, decision-making, documentation, and professional behavior
Provide real-time feedback, coaching, and remediation as needed
Complete accurate and timely training documentation and evaluations
Ensure compliance with state EMS regulations, medical director protocols, and company policies
Act as a clinical and operational resource for field staff
Participate in ongoing training program development and quality improvement initiatives
Maintain exemplary patient care, professionalism, and safety standards at all times
Current EMT or Paramedic certification (state-licensed and in good standing)
Minimum of 5 years of active field experience in 911 and/or IFT operations
Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
Current BLS (ACLS/PALS preferred, if applicable)
Strong knowledge of EMS protocols, operations, and documentation standards
Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
Prior experience as a Field Training Officer, Preceptor, or Clinical Educator
Instructor certifications (EMS, CPR, EVOC, etc.)
Experience with QA/QI programs and performance improvement
Strong conflict resolution and coaching abilities
Ability to perform all essential functions of EMT duties
Lift, carry, and move patients and equipment (up to 250 lbs.)
Work extended shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays as required
Operate emergency vehicles safely in varied conditions
