What will the Auto Body/Trailer Painter do?
The Auto Body/Trailer Painter will be responsible for performing a variety of painting tasks using industry-standard equipment and techniques. The painter will mix and match colors, apply paints and finishes efficiently and cost-effectively, and prepare surfaces to ensure high-quality results. They will be expected to work with different materials, maintain painting tools, operate compressors, and ensure equipment is stored correctly.
What is the Auto Body/Trailer Painter responsible for?
- Use painting tools and equipment commonly in use in the professional painting business.
- Select and match colors to coordinate with district-wide color schemes.
- Supervise an assistant (s) when provided.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Perform journey-level painting and finishing work.
- Maintain routine records.
- Work from scaffolding, riggings and ladders.
- Observe and apply painting trade safety standards and procedures.
- Mix paint and match colors.
- Use a variety of tools and operate equipment utilized in the painting trade.
- Maintain tools and equipment in a clean and proper working condition.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Perform duties effectively, timely, and without supervision.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Environment: May be exposed to a variety of environments.
- Indoor environment subject to changing conditions and temperatures.
- Regular exposures to fumes, dust, odors, heights, and loud noises.
- Working on ladders at varying heights.
- Regular exposure to vapors from paints and solvents.
- Exposure to loud noises from equipment operation.
What knowledge, skills and abilities are required for the Auto Body/Trailer Painter role?
- Painting equipment and painting practices currently in use in the profession.
- The most efficient and cost-effective painting and refinishing practices.
- Paint color mixing; quality and cost of paints and other finish materials.
- Surface preparation techniques.
- Methods of preparing a variety of surfaces for painting, repainting and finishing work.
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
- Operation and care of compressors and related equipment.
- Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
- Basic record-keeping techniques.
- Technical aspects of the painting trade.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
What are the physical demands of the Auto Body/Trailer Painter role?
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand for extended periods of time, climb ladders and work from heights as necessary. There will be occasional stooping, kneeling, bending, lifting, twisting reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally for some of his/her job duties.
Visual requirements include reading off a computer screen as well as printed materials. Continuous hand-eye coordination and manipulation of large and small objects to operate painting equipment and tools. Clarity of vision at varying distances is needed to perform various work assignments.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized tools and equipment and to drive.
Working with chemicals, tools, and powered machinery.
Verbal and auditory requirements include the ability to communicate clearly over the telephone as well as in person.
There is a moderate level of grasping, lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects of more than 80 lbs.
