Job Title: Clinical Laboratory Scientist
Job Description

This Clinical Laboratory Scientist role focuses on performing the full pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing with speed and accuracy in a hospital laboratory setting, as authorized under California State Business and Professions Code. You will analyze test results for a diverse patient population, including pediatric, neonatal, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, and ensure that results are reviewed, interpreted, and reported accurately to the appropriate providers or locations. The position requires maintaining rigorous quality control, quality assurance, and preventive maintenance in accordance with department policies, effectively using all laboratory computer systems, and meeting yearly state-mandated educational requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of clinical laboratory testing with speed and accuracy in accordance with California State Business and Professions Code.
  • Analyze and interpret test results for a wide range of patient populations, including pediatric, neonatal, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Review and report test results accurately and promptly to the appropriate provider or designated location.
  • Perform and record instrument preventive maintenance procedures, following daily, weekly, and monthly schedules as defined by department protocol.
  • Document all maintenance procedures and quality control activities in accordance with established departmental policies.
  • Perform and record quality control results as determined by established protocols, ensuring reliability and integrity of test outcomes.
  • Verify all test sample requirements prior to testing, including correct labeling, appropriate tube types, and container suitability.
  • Perform all test procedures as outlined in the department’s procedure manual, adhering to standardized methods and safety practices.
  • Crosscheck results for appropriate correlations and ensure accurate reporting of all testing outcomes.
  • Record all required information on department log sheets, worksheets, printouts, file cards, and other documentation tools.
  • Utilize laboratory computer systems to enter, retrieve, and report data, ensuring accuracy and completeness of electronic records.
  • Participate in proficiency testing, inter-laboratory comparison tests, and competency assessments as required by regulatory and departmental standards.
  • Complete special assignments and projects in a timely manner, delivering the desired results and supporting laboratory operations.
  • Manage workload efficiently to complete procedures during the assigned work shift, making productive use of time and resources.
  • Perform clinical laboratory testing across multiple benches, including blood bank, chemistry, and hematology, in a fast-paced acute care hospital environment.
  • Conduct blood banking procedures, including antibody identifications, and ensure safe and accurate handling of blood products.
  • Perform chemistry testing, including troubleshooting and maintenance of analyzers, and respond effectively to quality control failures and instrument error codes.
  • Collaborate with fellow Clinical Laboratory Scientists, lab assistants, and bench leads to support continuous, high-quality laboratory services.
  • Work rotating weekend and holiday shifts as part of the laboratory schedule, providing reliable coverage for patient care needs.
  • Maintain yearly state-determined educational requirements and stay current with evolving laboratory practices and regulations.
Essential Skills
  • 2+ years of Clinical Laboratory Scientist experience within a fast-paced, large acute care hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated competency in clinical laboratory testing across multiple benches, including blood bank, chemistry, and hematology.
  • Strong blood bank skills, including blood banking procedures and antibody identification.
  • Ability to perform chemistry testing, including troubleshooting and maintenance of analyzers and related equipment.
  • Proficiency in recognizing and responding to quality control failures, including defining and executing appropriate troubleshooting steps.
  • Ability to respond effectively when analyzers generate error codes, including systematic problem-solving and escalation when necessary.
  • National Clinical Laboratory Scientist license (CLS) required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Experience working in an acute care hospital environment, managing a high volume and fast pace of laboratory testing.
  • Ability to work rotating weekends and holidays as part of the regular schedule.
  • Proficiency in utilizing laboratory computer systems for data entry, result reporting, and documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail in verifying sample requirements, labeling accuracy, and adherence to testing protocols.
  • Ability to analyze test results for diverse patient populations, including pediatric, neonatal, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience on all laboratory benches, including blood bank, chemistry, and hematology, in a hospital setting.
  • 1+ year of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a hospital environment, with exposure to acute care workflows.
  • Comfort working in a high-acuity, fast-paced setting rather than a smaller community hospital environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete special assignments and projects with accuracy and within established timelines.
  • Strong organizational skills for maintaining detailed documentation of maintenance, quality control, and test results.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with fellow Clinical Laboratory Scientists, lab assistants, and bench leads.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and meeting yearly state educational requirements.
  • Ability to adapt to varying workload levels, managing periods of stress while maintaining accuracy and composure.
Work Environment

This position is based in an acute care hospital laboratory and operates in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. There are two openings available on the AM shift and NOC shift, and you must be available to work holidays and rotating weekends. The role is a registry position, providing coverage for leaves of absence, vacations, and last-minute call-offs, which requires flexibility and reliability. You will work closely with approximately three other Clinical Laboratory Scientists, two to three lab assistants, and a lead on the bench, fostering a collaborative and supportive team atmosphere. The culture, especially at night, is described as very helpful and knowledgeable. While the work can be stressful at times due to the acute care nature and daytime specialty testing, nighttime duties are often more general, with a focus on admitting patients at night and discharging patients during the day. You will use laboratory analyzers, blood bank equipment, chemistry and hematology instruments, and multiple computer systems to perform and document testing. Professional laboratory attire and adherence to safety and infection control standards are expected at all times.
