Job Title: Medical Lab Scientist II
Job Description

The Medical Lab Scientist II performs routine and complex clinical laboratory testing to support accurate diagnosis and high-quality patient care. This role evaluates specimen acceptability, operates and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation, and ensures all testing follows established Standard Operating Procedures and quality standards. The position requires strong technical judgment, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria and departmental procedures.
  • Perform routine and complex technical laboratory procedures in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and analyzers to ensure proper functionality and minimal downtime.
  • Make sound technical decisions regarding testing, including problem solving and resolution of testing issues.
  • Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents, controls, and related materials to ensure accuracy and reliability of results.
  • Report accurate and timely test results to support high-quality patient care and clinical decision making.
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment according to schedule.
  • Conduct and document quality control procedures, promptly addressing any out-of-range or inconsistent results.
  • Identify, monitor, and replenish testing bench supplies to maintain continuous workflow.
  • Assist with the processing and handling of specimens as needed to support overall laboratory operations.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment and consistently wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to a team-oriented laboratory culture.
  • Adapt to changing business needs, including working overtime or alternative shifts when required.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or equivalent education that meets local CLIA or state regulatory requirements.
  • Minimum of 2–4 years of clinical laboratory testing experience.
  • Active state Medical Technologist license, such as a Florida Medical Technologist license, when required by local regulations.
  • ASCP or AMT certification when required by the specific assignment or regulatory standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform both routine and complex clinical laboratory tests accurately and efficiently.
  • Proficiency in operating, monitoring, and troubleshooting laboratory instruments and analyzers.
  • Strong technical decision-making and problem-solving skills in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills to document work and interact with laboratory staff and clinical teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a busy laboratory environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing effectively to a team.
  • Ability to pass a standardized color vision screening.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • ASCP or AMT certification preferred when not required by regulation.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems and related computer applications.
  • General computer proficiency, including data entry and navigation of laboratory software.
  • Experience working as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Flexibility to work overtime or different shifts based on operational and patient care needs.
Work Environment

This role is based in a clinical laboratory environment that supports patient diagnostic testing. The position involves regular use of laboratory instruments, analyzers, and computer-based laboratory information systems. Team members follow established safety protocols and consistently wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as lab coats, gloves, and eye protection, to handle specimens and reagents safely. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
