Controls Engineer

Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Controls Engineer to design, develop, and commission control systems for industrial and building automation projects. The ideal candidate will deliver reliable, code-compliant control solutions, produce clear technical drawings and documentation, and work with multidisciplinary teams to meet project scope, schedule, and budget. A working knowledge of AutoCAD, NFPA standards, and modern control systems is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement control system architectures, including PLCs, HMIs, and networked I/O to meet project requirements.
  • Create, review, and maintain electrical and control schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD.
  • Develop, configure, and debug PLC and HMI programs, using industry-standard languages and development environments.
  • Ensure designs and installations comply with applicable NFPA codes and other relevant standards; coordinate with safety and code teams as required.
  • Lead site testing, start-up, and commissioning activities; perform system validation, functional testing, and troubleshooting to achieve performance targets.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and project engineering teams, as well as clients and subcontractors, to integrate control solutions into larger systems.
  • Prepare and maintain project documentation, including specifications, test procedures, as-built drawings, and operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Provide technical support and training to operations staff and end users; respond to field issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Support project planning and cost estimating; maintain schedules and communicate technical progress and risks to stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement by evaluating new control technologies, developing standards, and implementing best practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical, Controls, Automation, or related Engineering discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience designing and commissioning control systems (PLC/HMI/BAS) in industrial or commercial projects.
  • Proficient with AutoCAD for creating and revising electrical/control drawings and panel layouts.
  • Strong knowledge of NFPA standards relevant to controls and life safety systems; experience ensuring code compliance during design and installation.
  • Experience with PLC programming (ladder logic, structured text, function block), HMI configuration, and common industrial communication protocols (Modbus, BACnet, Ethernet/IP, OPC).
  • Familiarity with instrumentation, sensors, motor control, and power distribution as they relate to control systems.
  • Proven experience with site commissioning, troubleshooting, and system validation; ability to diagnose complex faults under time constraints.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation and train end users.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Professional licensure (PE) or relevant certifications (NICET, NETA, manufacturer certifications) is a plus; valid drivers license and willingness to travel to job sites as required.
