What will I do as a Chaplain with Genacross?

  • Provide a ministry of spiritual car and support for the residents, families, and staff of Genacross Lutheran Services.
  • Encourage and enhance faithfulness to the Mission and Values throughout the facility.
  • Convey, reinforce, and support a sense of mission among staff members by providing prayer and devotions for staff meetings, for inter- and intra- departmental meetings, spiritual support for staff members experiencing personal crises, and modeling daily working relationships with staff which are cooperative, interdependent, and consultative.
  • Clarifying and encouraging Christian values at every level of the organization and being available to offer in-service education to staff on religious and/or spiritual issues (including orientation in the Society's Mission and Core Values).
  • Function as a minister of Word and Sacrament within the ministries.
  • The chaplain provides direct ministry to residents and their families by:
    • Conducting worship events, such as Sunday Services with and without Holy Communion, mid-week worship events, memorial services, and funeral services, all with adequate and appropriate sensory cues to means and procedures, or arranging for other clergy to provide them;
    • Initiating a spiritual care relationship with each resident (within 76 hours for new residents), along with a written spiritual assessment and formulation of a personal spiritual care plan for each;
    • Being sensitive and supportive of the spiritual diversity of residents;
    • Responding as promptly as possible to staff referrals;
    • Being readily available to residents and their families for spiritual support and/or spiritual counseling, including visitations of residents who are hospitalized and who have no home clergy available to them;
    • Informing residents' home clergy of hospital confinements or other special needs for pastoral care, with the permission of residents for their families, while maintain confidentiality;
    • Being on-call or arranging for on-call service for spiritual care emergencies;
    • Encouraging and supporting the ministries of residents' home clergy to their respective residents;
    • And fostering a sense of supportive spiritual community among residents.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clergy and congregations in Northwestern Ohio, including those of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and of other denominations whenever opportunities to do so present themselves.
  • Attend meetings of pastors and special worship events of congregations.
  • Invite pastors and congregational groups to utilize the facilities of Genacross Lutheran Services and to share their spiritual lives with residents.
  • Actively encourage congregational members and groups to volunteer their skills, time, and energy to enhance the lives of residents and in so doing to create and enhance a culture of caring throughout facility.
  • Seek opportunities to meet with other chaplains and take advantage of continuing education offerings.
  • The chaplain maintains an internal spiritual centeredness that includes daily spiritual disciplines, self-care, family support, congregational life, continuing education, and regular schedules of work and relaxation.

Chaplain Requirements:

  • Master of Divinity and a minimum of 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (or comparable pastoral experience).
  • Ordained and Rostered Lutheran Pastor.
  • 5+ years of ministry experience.
  • Familiarity with basic computer skills. Ability to learn new software applications as required by the position.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with senior executives, managers, supervisors and direct care staff, as well as residents, families and physicians.
  • Understands directions; communicates and responds to inquiries promptly.
