THE POSITION

The Department of Environmental Protection is seeking candidates who are dedicated to protecting the health and safety of Pennsylvania's residents and environment. Aquatic Biologist 2 is a rewarding opportunity to use your scientific knowledge to create positive change. You will work as part of our Conservation Restoration and Inspection (CRI) Section of the Southwest Region's Waterways and Wetlands Program to conduct environmental investigations and protect waterways across an eight county region. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position conducts independent investigations, inspections, and environmental reviews to protect the natural aquatic resources that communities and wildlife depend on in the eight counties of Pennsylvania's Southwest Region. As an Aquatic Biologist 2, you will perform the following duties:


  • Field Investigations: Perform site visits to conduct complaint response, observe environmental conditions, and identify potential violations
  • Permit Review: Assess encroachments or obstructions in waterways and wetlands to determine permit needs and evaluate restoration or mitigation work
  • Environmental Analysis: Coordinate and carry out aquatic wildlife surveys and ecological studies to understand impacts on water quality and the overall health of aquatic environments
  • Technical Guidance: Advise responsible parties on compliance steps, collaborate with partner agencies to resolve issues, and develop and conduct training for staff regarding wetland field investigations
  • Reporting Duties: Prepare detailed written reports, enter data into tracking systems, and maintain accurate records
  • Public Communication: Represent the Department in meetings, respond to questions from the public and local officials, and provide expert testimony in administrative conferences and court hearings

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel will be required for site visits.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to three days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as an Aquatic Biologist 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of professional experience in aquatic biology or water pollution biology and a bachelor's degree with a major in a biological science, natural science, environmental science, or natural resource management, including or supplemented by six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or closely related aquatic science coursework; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or closely related aquatic science coursework.


Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of a valid motor vehicle license.
