THE POSITION

The Chemist 1 position with the Department of Environmental Protection is a great way to begin your career in environmental science. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports laboratory testing that helps monitor environmental conditions across the Commonwealth. It involves preparing samples, conducting chemical analyses, and supporting accurate reporting. As a Chemist 1, you will perform the following duties:

  • Sample Preparation: Prepare water and wastewater samples, standards, reagents, and quality control materials for testing
  • Chemical Analysis: Perform laboratory tests for solids, dissolved solids, osmotic pressure, and other required measurements
  • Data Management: Record results, maintain chain of custody, and enter information into laboratory systems
  • Instrument Use: Operate balances and analytical instruments while following standard operating procedures
  • Quality Control: Follow safety rules, use certified standards, and support internal quality assurance requirements
  • Sample Receipt: Receive, sort, label, and document incoming samples and resolve identification issues with collectors

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Limited Term: Six-month full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Some travel may be required
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $26.57 per hour (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in chemistry; or
  • A bachelor's degree that includes 30 credits in chemistry or biochemistry.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits
