Job Title: CNC Machinist

Job Description

This role focuses on operating and setting up CNC equipment in a dedicated CNC shop, producing high-quality machined components in a steel manufacturing environment. The CNC machinist programs, sets up, and runs mills, lathes, machining centers, and drilling centers to meet precise blueprint specifications while maintaining strong safety and quality standards on a consistent 3rd-shift schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Set up CNC machines, including mills, lathes, machining centers, and drilling centers, according to blueprint specifications and job requirements.
  • Edit and manipulate CNC programs directly at the machine to run new jobs and parts as needed.
  • Change out and adjust tooling to meet specific fabrication and production requirements.
  • Load and unload raw materials and finished goods using hoists, jib cranes, and overhead cranes in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform in-process and final quality inspections of machined parts using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and CMM/Faro equipment.
  • Operate CNC equipment such as Mazak, Haas, and Doosan machines while monitoring performance and making necessary adjustments.
  • Follow detailed blueprints and work instructions to ensure parts meet dimensional and quality specifications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area within assigned machining cells.
  • Collaborate with other machinists and team members to support efficient workflow and problem-solving within the machine shop.
  • Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, including proper use of PPE and safe material-handling practices.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of experience as a CNC machinist in a steel manufacturing facility.
  • Proven ability to set up CNC mills, lathes, machining centers, and drilling centers to blueprint specifications.
  • Hands-on experience editing and adjusting CNC programs at the machine control.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Demonstrated skill in performing precision measurements using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and CMM/Faro equipment.
  • Experience operating CNC machines such as Mazak, Haas, and Doosan.
  • Ability to safely use hoists, jib cranes, and overhead cranes to move raw materials and finished parts.
  • Strong, consistent work history with stable tenure in previous roles.
  • Capability to work 3rd shift (8:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday).
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and adherence to standard operating procedures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Background in a climate-controlled machine shop environment.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing layouts and cell-based machining operations.
  • Experience working with galvanized steel and awareness of associated ventilation considerations.
  • Comfort working in small machining cells with one or two machinists per area.
  • Ability to collaborate within a team of approximately 10 machinists per shift.

Why Work Here?

This is a small, family-owned environment where individuals are recognized and valued rather than treated as just a number. The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage with 100% of employee premiums paid. A cafeteria on site provides homemade food at a discounted cost, supporting convenience and work-life balance. Employees can participate in a 401(k) plan with a 50% match on contributions up to 4% of gross income. Paid time off includes six paid holidays (eligibility beginning after 90 days), one company-paid floating holiday, and a progressive vacation schedule of one week after six months, two weeks after one year, and three weeks after ten years. The culture emphasizes stability, long-term employment, and a supportive, team-oriented atmosphere.

Work Environment

The role is based in a climate-controlled machine shop located on the far east end of the production floor, organized in a lean manufacturing layout to promote efficient material flow. Machinists work in cell groups, typically with no more than two machinists per cell, within a team of about ten machinists on each shift. Ventilation is strong throughout the facility, though occasional work on galvanized steel may create a visible haze in localized weld areas due to heat-related reactions. Dress expectations include jeans, steel-toe footwear, and a work shirt, with safety glasses provided and required as standard PPE. The environment combines modern CNC technologies, including Mazak, Haas, and Doosan machines, with a structured, safety-focused production floor designed for both efficiency and comfort.
